As above we employ an 18 year old apprentice that wrote his car off a couple of weeks ago due to careless driving and is now looking at getting a new car but doesn't want to use it for running around the yards with (which is fair enough) so he wants putting on the farm van insurance... what would be the fairest way? Obviously its going to be more to insure him on the van after his recent claim. Tia

.Unfortunately its 16 miles never flits between very oftens though maybe once a week! Yes we had his Dad round throwing his weight around saying what we should be doing etc. Can't really be doing with the hassle tbh just thought we'd give the lad a chance

Buy cheapo Fiesta/Corsa van and insure him for that 3rd party so if he stuff it it's less painful? Tell him it's on a black box?

All depends on what cover you have now, we had any driver policy with NFU when I looked after insurance, one driver got done drinking and driving in the 1970s and the insurance co at the time, General Accident, would insure him after his ban was over, but only for 3rd party cover for the next 5 years.
If you do as @ollie989898 suggests don't let him take it home or use it for personal use, which would be a 'Benefit In Kind' anyway.

As above, you've got the tool for dealing with the father- you can -if needs be- say you can't get your insurer to cover him (which might be a real thing in reality). Some companies have a clause in their terms of employment that they are legally allowed to sack you if you lose your license to drive...
I'd told him to always make it right on time sheet if he travelled on the job in his own viechle. E.g. 32 mile round trip put 1.5hrs on top but he complained his car smelt of pigs. I will give the nfu a ring in the morning and see what they say. Took the lad on when he had no job and was in a bit of a mess and he shows no respect or gratitude what so ever, he's lazy and never does a job properly unless he's sat on his arse. Then as soon as there's a problem his Dads in the yard and he hasn't even had a proper bollocking... yet

Yeah, tell him it will be push bike not a moped if he doesn't buck his ideas up. You wont do the lad any favours letting him think he can behave like his father to get what he wants.

That attitude is no good at all and bringing in your Dad every time you have a disagreement is just bullship. I'd say you can't get any insurance cover and be done with it all.
The traits are from his father. See the lad as a project. (easier said from a distance, I know).

Grey area re vehicle use. I don't think he should use his own vehicle to travel between sites to be fair. If he'd pranged his car between sites would he be insured using his motor for your business purposes. Most 18 year olds aren't savy enough on what to say if PC plod is involved. Put a git excess on insurance and point out to all who drive it that if it is involved in an accident whoever has hold of the steering wheel at the time has the excess to pay. A contractor I ran with had that on a notice stuck to dashboard of the van we used to get there and back from where we were working.
I mean the lad sounds a pr*ck… but also it’s not his job to get between sites that’s your job! He has too drive too a single place of employment anything beyond that is your problem… if he gets stopped driving between sites he’ll get shafted for no insurance because he’s not got business insurance…
Yes i do both understand but it consists of starting the day at another yard and finishing the day there. People at the local co ops around here shift between shops for shifts etc, isn't that the same?

As an 18 year old who has written off a car you will be paying thousands for insurance.
Does he really need to go to the other yard or send someone else. Or send 2 with him as a passenger.
Travelling once a week a taxi would probably be cheaper. Both he and his father need to learn there are consequences to their actions and be told he has just made your life more difficult and expensive. Doesn't sound a great asset.

no it's not, I know someone who gets up at 3.30 three days a week to feed calves (don't ask why they feed calves at 4am!)

if he is over 18, I would point out to the father (in a polite way) that due to confidentiality I could not discuss anything with him.
