They did open properly so far that you could hardly reach to shut it, the gas struts must be weak on that one or the wrong ones.
It was the 20 series that had the rear window that never opened properly.

The one I drove was just like guys about half mast!!

Must of been the luck of the draw which struts you got then.
only ever seen the window go right up on them, and like I said you could hardly reach it as you had to grab the latch to shut it.
