Major Riots over French Farmers "Megabasins"

Major rioting with many injured has broken out due to a consortium of large arable farmers building a series of large irrigation reservoirs. This has pitted two large farmers unions against each other. One supporting the Ecologists and smaller farm units, verses the union that predominantly resents the larger arable farmers. Could be interesting.

Basically these 350 big farms will pump water from the underground aquifers during the winter into these 16 mega lakes in order to irrigate principally Maize, I assume. This will leave the aquifers low or even empty for everybody else who relies on boreholes or wells etc for their farms or businesses in the locality.

I always thought boreholes were a bonkers idea. Dry the land out from underneath as a short term fix to irrigate the surface. Additionally there’s the danger of salt sea water ingress under the land as has happened in the States. Utterly bonkers policy of fudge you corporatism.
A huge amount of the water used in the Wessex water area is from a bore hole on Salisbury plain, luckily as it's a wet area it gets refilled every winter but drawing up water from drier areas in large quantities is bonkers, should only take what gets replaced each year

Sounds like most Western Water companies in action.

They then proceed to blame "Climate Change" for fires and a hotter environment - the principle cooling source for life is Photosynthesis and Water evapouration from plants.

From memory I think the water table in the USA for most of the continent is several hundred metres lower and in Saudi Arabia & Middle East over 1km lower.

Dumber still is taking pottable rainwater in Cities & Towns and immediately mixing it with Sewerage, Commercial & Industrial waste.

Government is bloody aweful, then they blame everyone else for the problems THEY create.

Town floods in winter so they say we need to create useless swamp like sacrifice land.
Apply for a licence to abstract water from the flooding river into your own reservoir and it’s a no go. That’s the kind of brains that runs things now.

I don't get it.

Surely people realise pumping exhaust gases into the ground mixing with water that you drink isn't a good idea. They be moaning about poisoned water supply next.

"Climate Change" is creating one aweful mess. How did these very stupid people get into power ?

Do you understand the geology of the region? The "aquifers" are underground rivers,
The "big farms" are on average 117 ha mostly Dairy average 72.3 cows 82% milked by robots, growing fourage mais, 42% irrigated by ramp and pivot,
The drying cost for a tonne of mais is now over 60 euros tonne so grain is not viable, The wheat yields are sub 5 tonne ha in that region.
They are to be 72% covered in solar panels to stop evaporation, All of this is in the planning documents, please read them, as they cost millions to prepare, 7 227 pages, at Sainte Soline alone,

As I posted elsewhere, if as reported this is about 16 reservoir holding something like 1200 million gallons it is peanuts in real terms
Unfortunately, it's not just 16, they just happen to be a focal point. There are dozens already built and possibly hundreds under planning.

I am not surprised that a journalist would get it wrong. If though the water resources are managed properly it should be no issue though, but there is only one source of water and if they abstract too much then it can have very big consequences for the local wells and rivers

A group of friends [not me or mine] are going on holiday to Bordeaux on this coming Friday. Best of luck to them! They are to commence a river cruise from there apparently.
They should not worry, dined at a restaurant in Paris with all manner of mayhem going on just metres away. Nobody but oursleves were concerned while cobblestones were flying back and forth were flying
