2021/22 production was 8% above 2001/2, cow numbers have been fairly static. NI production has increased by nearly 40% in that time
This was my point, dairy farm numbers decreasing but production increasing. Wouldnt matter if another 1000 farms quit the litres would still flow as lots of that ground would either be sold or rented to dairy.

There surely has to be a point where the continued reduction of producer numbers will significant impact.

Looking around the farms in my area, it makes you wounder if the the constant "push" required to run many of them, either physically, mentally or financially is sustainable long term, never mind getting bigger.

Here in Lancashire they are building thousands and thousands of houses, but they don’t seem to be building any new schools, or hospitals.
Which is worrying
Same thing all over the country, no extra doctors, dentists, schools, hospitals etc, the governments borrowed up to the hilt & building houses is the only money spinner they have.

Been thinking along those lines for a long time but it hasn’t come to be.
Indeed I’ve been thinking for a while now that I’ll live to see dairy farmers numbers halve………….from where they are now, there will be less than a quarter of the dairy farmer numbers of when I left school……..about the time quotas were introduced, but the milk keeps flowing
