Is nemo still a risk at this stage bringing lambs in for second jab of hep p so Guna dose them for worms too as last time was 5-6 weeks ago

I know I should get a fec done but don't have the time atm so wondering should I do them with a white wormer again

Thanks

One group of mine had a high count last week (they were clean and still looking well) and that was in 14 week old lambs, but another group were clean. If you think there's any risk I'd do them.

I have been monitoring a group of December born lambs weekly, so that we can start an HCC project. They have had 2x white wormer, the last being 5 weeks ago, and don't look loose or poor in the coats. There Strongyle worm count is low and not rising above 150epg, with about the same of nemo eggs. Don't seem to be causing any issues, and I need the count higher for the project.

On the other hand, on an Autumn reseed in the next door field, there was a small group of late March born lambs. They had no nemo eggs at all (1x white wormer 3 weeks ago) and 600 epg of strongyles and were starting to look 'wormy'.

I haven't done my April born lambs on old pp for nemo, as they don't look to be needing it.

Every field and group of lambs is different. If you do worm them, a 'normal' drench will knock out any nemo anyway. The only time for most to use white wormer, would be when you are trying to tackle just nemo. I'd have thought by now, IF they need worming at all, it won't be just nemo.

Got fec done was bit of a faff as had to drive 15 mile to different practice as local didn't do it

Count was 300 didn't get a break down but mixture of nemo and roundworm I think didn't really here what the other was

Got normectin to drench them later today

A worm egg count with no breakdown is as bad as no egg count.

Need to know strongyle type egg numbers and nematodirus egg numbers.

I wouldn't worm a batch of lambs with 300 strongyle eggs, but I would if I was getting many (possibly any) nematodirus.

I'm with Bovine on this. I'd worm them because there are nemo present, but if there weren't I wouldn't worm on a count of 300 unless the looked wormy. I'd do a count again in a few weeks and see how they were doing then.

It's not an exact science - the history of the lambs also plays a part (dirty backsides reduce my threshold to treat, watery faeces have lower egg counts so bring me watery scour and the true egg count is likely to be higher)

From SCOPS

Personally if nematodirus was there I'd have gone in with white drench to deal with that, even if it left the other worms alone.

My general advice for sheep with egg counts falling into the medium category is to re sample in 10-14 days, unless lambs doing badly.

150 strongyle eggs do not need worming. That is a low count. The lambs need exposure to these worms for a period of time to allow their immunity to develop.

150 nematodirus eggs need treating.

I can keep the wormer I have for the next time and get a white if you really think it would be beneficial

I'm not going to directly contradict your vet and give you different advice. I'm quite surprised by what they have said. It's not going to do any great harm.
