He's using the crimper on the carrier to try and kill the cover crop without Roundup I believe, pretty sure the Carrier discs are hardly touching the ground. Straight in with the 750A will still need Roundup post drilling to kill the cover crop, this method might mean Roundup isnt needed. Be interesting to know how its going @Clive ?

How come you’re not banging straight in with the 750a? @Clive

As above it was a experiment we did a few weeks ago after -7 overnight frosts and -3 max daytime temp - using the carrier crosscutter with discs out of work so just the front crimper roller and rear roller destroying the cover crop to see how much frost kill we get

Bit of on farm R&D really to see if spring zerotill crops are possible without glyphosate in the future. did 10ha like this and another 10ha twice over to compare with with the standard 3l/ha of glyphosate 1 week post drilling on the green cover

there was no soil disturbance or structure damage as hard frozen soils carry weight well, We will be direct drilling spring oats into it soon as conditions allow

I will posts a few pics of what kind of job the frost and crimping have done when I'm next in that field

Just out of interest, what glypho product are you using at 3lts/ha post drilling, as I was under the impression 1.5lts/ha was maximum rate pre emergence? I stand to be corrected.

I use whatever 360g product I can get cheapest - I’m unaware of any restriction on rate at my timing - you can use 4/L to desiccate a crop if you wish

Gatekeeper sentinel checker certainly never throws up any restriction or warning when I record it and we had a full DEFRA inspection last autumn that threw up no problems

I’m applying pre em obviously or would take out the crop, can’t really see any logical reason why a day pre drilling, a week post drilling or pre Harvest would be subject to different max rates

Some generics have no pre-em approval on the label, and others that do have a max dose of 1.5lts/ha

I will check but if the products I use had such restriction gatekeeper sentinel would have flagged it up and defra would have picked it up in their recent inspection if they were doing the job properly

I would never use glyphosate in any situation at less than 1000g active / ha as doing so is the road to resistance imo

I quite agree with the resistance issue, but as I understand it, no product is approved above 1.5lts post drilling. Perhaps a few of the agro's on here would care to comment (I don't know how to tag)

None over 1.5 l/ha of the 7 I’ve just viewed!
@Clive why don’t you call Defra and double check?
What was the brand?

I use various brands - if it wasn’t approved gatekeeper sentinel would not let us do it and defra would have flagged it at our recent inspection

I’m pretty confident it’s ok as we are well within the 7 day harvest interval where 4L/ha can be used !

Depends on what is written on rec sheet, if pre emergence as growth stage then 4.0 is outside of label recs, when you write a rec on GK you select the crop scenario eg I if select pre emergence and input 4.0 it flags red

Looks fine to me - 4L fine on all the crops grow with a 7 day harvest interval

Kind of top trumps the pre em rate imo and clearly also in the opinion of gatekeeper sentinel and defra inspector who visited last autumn and went through our records

AFAIK you can't put 3 l/ha on when spraying after drilling on the green whatever the wording you put on your sheets.
