not everyday !

i like an avocado and asparagus/ strawberries / bananas etc all year around

we are a looooong way from self sufficient and always will be, food security is a VERY flawed argument for farmers

if imports stoped tomorrow how are we going to decide which 47% starves to death then ?
I part agree.

We need to trade, to share what we can grow sustainably here for what others can grow better than us.

Just like many livestock farms import cereals for supplementary feed.

However, we (UK population) waste a third of our food, apparently, and a lot consume more than necessary, so I'd bet with 60% self sufficiency, if a major import issue arose, we could find a way to feed the nation.

Think back to WW1 and 2, and the War Agricultural Executive Committee.

It was actually Dominic Cummings who came up with it. I got my figures wrong above as the £350m per week was based on us paying EU £20bn annually, not £8bn
However various schemes meant we had a net contribution of £11bn.

Total rubbish
If foodsupply was cut by 50% we could still survive. People would just get thinner .
Thats what happened in ww2.
Peeople were healthier argueably
100% cut off-in food supply its armageddon
Afraid not.
There are local Government plans and organisations in every County already in place for such an event. It wouldn’t take anything like a 50% reduction in food to enact it.

It could be caused so easily if those that wanted to cause it thought about how to do it.
It wouldn’t start off with a shortage of food itself, but something else we all rely on, without which it would be anarchy within 3 days!

Make sure your tractors and any chains are well and truly locked up each night. Especially if you have any pylons near you.

I have a list. At the top are a couple of presenters of seasonal BBC productions and a Guardian journalist who doesn’t like sheep closely followed by the sons of a deceased financier much loved by Private Eye.
There are more but feel free to add your own.

48% drop in food supply would be managesble for a while
Withdrawal of N fert would be same result

I happened to go in to a KFC last week ... and if the clientele are anything to go by, we are a long way from starving

Overall, though, it was a very odd experience. Never eaten greasy chicken before or weirdly flavoured chips.

A few cordless grinders could bring the country to a standstill very quickly

I think 50/ 60 % food efficiency misses the point , it's world food efficiency that matters.
While world food efficiency has been running at 1-2 % above and below for several years , a rich country like ours doesn't have to be efficient in food production.
It's when world food production starts to drop that a country run like ours gets into trouble.

That's so 1970's , it will be a cyber attack, a few clicks of a mouse in a warm office deep in the heart of government build of China, Russia or some other meddling state
Funny I was saying that to someone only yesterday, that could cripple any country but it is probably easier to guard against that sort of attack than guard the thousands of Ng pylons round the country, the hard part is knowing just how far to cut through before running away 😱🤣

You could be correct but and a big BUT a cordles grinder would do it quicker as they do not have enough staff to do the repairs
