Pulled over for dvsa inspection

Iirc the plates on the vehicle have to have the makers name and postcode on them and they are not supposed to make them up without a reg. document. However for trailers think an ebay sourced plate is ok.
But check it out don't blame me....
Nearly....NEW plates have to have the above. Existing plates don't have to be replaced with new ones unless damaged.

What’s the definition of new and existing?
Are plate’s sitting in the back of the shed that I haven’t got around to fitting new or existing? 😂😂😂

I presume there is a date when this came in, all plates made thereafter needing to have the makers details

Is there anywhere it's stated that the two plates have to be displayed on the sides of the bonnet? Any reason not to have them on the sides of the cab roof?

From earlier in the Thread from @Courier.

No mention of height above ground, but must be clear to read...

Read this and understand that if you have a plate on each side of the tractor then there is no need for a rear plate on the tractor, it’s implement or any trailer it is towing. - QR code for referencing by any person in “authority” who believes otherwise ….🤦🏻‍♂️
“OR” has significance.

For clarity as far as I'm aware the postcode and makers name etc on number plates was intended to clamp down on people cloning plates and also buying plates with fancy letter fonts etc.
If you buy plates online you get round the regs on needing to show v5 etc as most online companies are either based in Ireland or bill via so don't come under the regs. As long as you buy a standard uk plate i don't think anyone is gonna give a F*** about the missing postcode.

Sorry that’s not true. You buy plates on line and you buy them as “show plates “ it will state In the small print. Not for road use….. I have them on my trailer and haven’t been stopped but like 80% of the advice on here… doesnt make it 100% legal

I reckon it would take a very special sort of law enforcement officer to do you if you had matching plates to your tow vehicle with the correct font but no maker’s details as you would certainly be complying with the spirit of the law

So what's not true. I didn't say buying online meant they would be 100% legal but they can still be to the same standard as a proper plate with postcode etc which is a lot better than reg number written on trailer door in crayon.
Tbh were getting away from the main thing here which is that even though its a little bit of a hassle with having to show documents to get plates made up from local motor factors etc it's no excuse in this day and age not to do it. I'll bet if most on here ask at their local mot garage they use they can probably get them number plates without all the hassle ( they shouldn't buy they probably will).

One of the easiest times to get some new plates is to ask dealer for some when you buy a new tractor, as they already have the documents

Having just wasted 10 mins of my life reading this thread I'm speechless.
A number plate Is roughly a tenner from local motor factors, all legal, it's not difficult. I would never have thought to buy them online, I'm all for saving money but number plates for show puroposes without a maker's code, who actually looks for them. If it's on the back of a farm trailer or machine who cares if it does the job.
Sounds like the official was throwing his weight about, but that is what we are all up against, the overweight fastrac brigade with a young steering wheel assistant has helped this no end.
End of the day, pulled over and they wanted number plate on, stick one on job done.
It's not going to get any better.

I was always disappointed that I never got stopped by an officious plod in my Defender as the original front plate had no markings apart from the reg no and the back had an additional postcode in small print at the bottom. I ended up putting new ones on as both ended up getting cracked and were MoT failures.
I'd have loved to have pointed out that the previous owner was responsible for fitting them and if it was OK for them then it was OK for everyone else.
Previous owner? Thames Valley Police :)

There is at least one of that sort of enforcement officer patrolling South Mimms services on the M25. Some cars with illegally spaced letters and numbers have been done there.
