My little single cylinder 15hp Holder tractor decided not to start after putting it away for the winter at the end of October. Checked diesel pumping through to injector. Took injector out and wiped superficial soot off the end. When turning over produced plenty of chuffing smoke then after 10 minutes of trying to start with cold start button engaged it finally struck up with clouds of smoke and engine run away. Fortunately not much diesel in the tank but still very scary until it finally stopped itself after 3 minutes. No control whatsoever on throttle lever to shut it down.
Any advice what to do now. Engine still turns over and I have compression but no cold start button and no diesel being pumped to injector. Exhaust seems very oily.

Would pay to take the rocker box off and just check everything is still in tact.

We had a turbo go on a tractor a few years back and it got on its own oil, Uncle was driving on the road at the time and very luckily it stopped on the key. Had a new turbo but never was right after, no power, rattled and lots of smoke etc so was rebuilt last year.

Nope there was plenty of issues
Clutch issue
No front fucin wheels
Honestly cant remember what sort of money, 15. 20 year ago , as we all say probably worth abit now .
Love to know if it lived or we'd killed it .
A mate took some scrap from same farm , iron bath with stuff in . Put in back of van with his missus, come to unload other end and disturbed the family of rats that had bin in the bath the all the journey under the other stuff . Now Running around in his yard with missis screaming.

Will certainly be doing that before I order the new diesel pump as it all comes in one piece and at just under 1500 euro's I want to know if I fix that then the rest will be ok. At the moment struggling to get the pump off even with having the schematic drawings.

had an engine in here for repair just after Christmas that ran off with itself, they got her stopped on the pull stop but going by the damage that had was done when i stripped it, i figured the jockey got a bit of a shock initially and just froze until someone else pulled the stopper.

i wasnt told the whole story initially , after checking a few things i turned her over with the stopper out but if i did i had a powder fire extinguisher, a lump of a rag and a knife within arms reach of me when i did, luckily enough i didnt need to use any of the above but its an uneasy position to be in, you could get blamed for something that had already happened iykwim...

ive never had to use the extinguisher on a runaway engine but they say the powder will smoother the engine.
of the three items it would of been my first port of call but luckily enough i needed none of them, the harm had been well done.

once the rpm's get up the pistons themselves will suck the oil out of the sump with the suction and use it as fuel, shes off on her own at that stage and if you didnt get her stopped quickly youd have a pair of balls as big as a dump truck to be hanging around after that ship sailed...
long steps at 90 degrees to the engine after that.

Wouldn't it be better with a C02 fire extinguisher rather than powder?

@renewablejohn Be interested to know the outcome. Struggling to remove the pump also implies stuck rack/control as it sticks in the shut position and the pin on it won't clear the fitting grove in the block casting.

Been onto the Holder factory and the pump removal is a bit technical as there is a peg on the back of the pump that has to be unwound from the throttle control. Not managed it as yet but at least I know its not a big hammer job.
