Not a good mix when I tried it last year as you said. Won't bother again. Happy to spread off the back of drill. Haven't got the snails you have on the chalk but we get the water off the downs. You drilling tomorrow I suspect?
 
If you want to mix anything in a drill or spreader first mix a small quantity of the ingredients and put these in then layer the remaining in the ratio you want them. As the drill/spreader empties out it forms a cone in the centre which mixes the bits very well.
