Sly no till drill

Saw it at LAMMA today, apparently using Boss openers from Australia, although they will be made in France and be better value. Single disc drill with compound angle, very similar to Bourgault 3710. Seemed like it could have decent potential.

Wrong on both counts I'm afraid!

Depth is taken off closing wheel, the other is for stopping soil throw.

Angle not like Weaving, as the unit is fixed not pivoted, so it will dig in - hence much less downforce needed from weight.

That explains why I couldn't see how depth control was achieved!
Also now get it re angle, will be interesting to see it working.

Like the 3 spoke 'guage' wheel, looks very similar to the new jd one, though as said it isn't setting drilling depth

I had a long chat with the French guy on the Sly stand today, he was very well clued up regarding drill design and no-till and spoke perfect English, he also runs a Moore on his own farm.

Although based on the Boss opener, it is actually Sly's own build with a few differences, but the same compound disc angles. The rubber wheel is free to float with a bit of spring pressure and is there to keep the disc clean and stop soil throw so that the top of the slot flap is still in position when it's firmed by the press wheel.

Depth is taken from the press wheel, not great if you are a JD fan, but I don't think it is a big deal on nice flat no-till fields. It is also angled to push the flap of soil sideways as a Guttler would be on a 750.

The coulter is mounted on rubber bushes to allow it to move a bit and is adjustable on it's three mounting bolts. The idea is to set it so it just lightly skims the disc so that when in work they are pressed together by outside forces. The coulter should also be set so it is level with the soil surface, not actually in the slot, like they do with a 750.

Unlike the Weaving GD, the disc angle is held in position so that it really does pull itself in. The drill at the show was just a prototype, but the guy said production ones would be made much lighter because it doesn't need the weight to get it in the ground, much like a tyne drill.

He is also thinking of doing away with the parallel linkage and mounting the opener on single hinge, just to make the drill more affordable. I wasn't sure about how that would work with depth control following well behind the disc but he had some idea of putting in another hinge to create a floating beam effect. The Seed Hawk get round this by using a very long trailing arm so that the difference in movement between the coulter and depth wheel is not so great.

Yes also liked this drill. No seed firming wheel but like the idea of a wider drill to go slower with less disturbance. Looking to change drill in a couple of years but always mainly had a tine drill with not too much to go wrong and easy to set up. So have time to see how all these new dd's develop.

Bill, the whole drill is manufactured in France at the Sly factory. The openers have been improved from the original Australian design, if you fancy a drive in southern France the factory is located in Bournel, Lot-et-Garonne
