Well we did it only a family farm I still couldn’t tell you if it was right or wrong the way things have gone and are going

If someone has offered you a £2 million profit, then I would say you haven't gone too far wrong.

I know time flies when you’re having fun, but the part of the 90’s when land was £1k/ac was 30 years ago, not 15.

land bought for 1600 in 1982 was sold for 1100 in 1992
some land on the market in the early 1990s had no takers at 1000 an acre

Depends on diet - vegetarain diet of cereals, veg, fruit and pulses, yes we could be self-sufficient, but that isnt going to happen,

considering the UK itself is dependent on imports for a large proportion of its consumption ?

sorry, but I think “feeding the world” is mostly done by North America, South America, Eastern Europe, Australasia ( including NZ ), China & India . . . Even with the various challenges of extreme weather, climates, logistics or politics . . .

again, sorry - but you lot aren’t “feeding the world”, so don’t kid yourselves that you are

I'm not sure Thatcher is at fault and just was dealing with the situation of the time and at the time.
From my own experience in the UK, and history shows it as well in UK industry that their been a hell of a lot of financial book cooking especially in the 50's to the late 80's/early 90's, at some point in time the chickens have to come home to roost.

Nor do I, I’m selling some land I bought 13 years ago, investing it elsewhere including either rebuild or revamp of farmhouse, that will double the money again in terms of asset value (expensive area).

Anyone with plenty of money in farming - hasn't made it from farming.

Sold land, crop of houses, industrial estate, waste removal business, quarry etc etc

How much is plenty ?

I for one would not wish to eat turnips 5 times a week during the winter.

why do folk come up with that drivel whenever this topic comes up.
I can remember hardly eating imported food in the winter and it didn't involve much turnip.
