I can't find any information on the the number of tractors in the UK since their inception, only for the last decade or so.
I would be very grateful for any help/ links/ information on this.
I would particularly like to know how many tractors were in the UK in the 1920's and 30's.

There is no central database I'm aware of but these might be of interest, if it mirrors the car there will be a rapid expansion from about 1920s onwards and then a post war 'boom' My great grand parents were working on horse and cart in the 40s and I think tractors were common around them maybe 50s / 60s onwards? They had grey fergies back in the stone age but foolishly I had little interest when anyone was live who knew first hand. Only thing they drummed into me was never leave a gate open or throw litter in a field.

You'll be interested in this bit from the link above but not tractor related

Since 1973 Farming income and TIFF have varied to a much greater extent. Much of the variation – in general, not just in this period - is due to changes in prices and exchange rates. The underlying trend was downwards during the rest of the 1970s and early 1980s. TIFF fell to £3.08 billion in 1985 (2018 prices). After some years of relative stability there was a very sharp increase in income in 1993 following the decline in the exchange rate after the UK left the Exchange Rate Mechanism. The Pound strengthened in the late 1990s together with lower commodity prices and BSE caused an even more rapid decline in aggregate income. TIFF reached a low of £1.9 billion in 2000, a fall of 70% in five years. Since 2000, TIFF has recovered to a high of £5.8 billion in 2013 but dropped to almost £4.7 billion in 2018. In 2017, TIFF was at its second highest level in 20 years (second only to the value in 2013), as a result of a favourable combination of a weaker pound, strong commodity prices and high levels of production.14

I think that the agricultural censuses taken during the war must have included figures on mechanisation at the time. I see that the warag reports on individual farms and the abilities of the farmers are being digitised and put on the web so we can see what grandad was up to and what they thought of him.

Granfer used to go around and inspect local farms in the war. Found some of his notebooks from the inspections and the comments were quite amusing. Interesting when you are local and know the farms today.
