Tractor test

this two hands on the steering wheel rule is just daft, if someone who has one arm can pass the test, why have to hold it with two?
It's plain common sense and good practice

I knew two lorry drivers with one arm and they had modified cabs including swivel on the wheel with a positive cup on their prosthetic

You are a lot more in control with two hands not one. If you hit a kerb or whatever even with power steering these days you're much more secure with two hands

It's still taught on fire appliance training now - unlike the dude I saw in town the other day driving and using both hands to put his shades on whilst moving

Don't forget the quick look over the left shoulder as well ... especially when doing a left turn ... to look for cyclists, motorbikes or anything on your inside (y)

No idea if it is relevant or even part of the test now but I was tested / questioned on drivers hand signals and hand signals from someone on the road with particular attention being made to drivers palm position for slowing down (facing downwards) and turning left (facing forwards) and correct arm movement. I did sit my test in the late 70's on a Massey 35X though :D

It may appear from a couple of comments that it is OK to have a practice round the test route with a qualified driver. If you are 16 it is not under any circumstance.
JP if you have 2 hands on the wheel, how are you going to play with your phone, just joking :)

or like MrWF with lighting a pipe, whilst pouring a cup of coffee and trying to see what's going on over the hedge whilst having a conversation on the mobile phone. He claims it's quite an art to be able to multi-task like this whilst driving

You should have a read through the Highway Code and know the road signs, he asked me on a few of these. Also some basic questions about the tractor ie how to check water and oil etc. When I did mine the minors were for blind spots. Everything else has been covered really.

Pouring a coffee, rolling a smoke whilst flat out at 40kmh in a self propelled hydrosatic sprayer whilst on the phone is also multi-tasking I believe ;)
