Trailed forage harvesters

@Chae1 We have a 1260 it goes well although we’ve never had a sp to compare against. I think they might become a bit more popular as the self propelled seem to have all gone a step too far with massive running costs and the big team needed to keep the clamp done properly. I’d prefer to do it ourselves as we have the tractors to go on the front and then we can do it when we want and the clamp is rolled well rather than coming in too fast

Think it was 40-50k, would rather chance it on a used self propelled myself.

Mmm dunno you might be lucky but you need time for those sort of things even just with servicing etc would add a fair bit of cost per acre for most farms.
Yeah, sure we're just better sticking with contractor with self propelled at moment. If weathers catchy he can get it all done quickly.

We have all the gear for It apart from chopper.

How much is a self propelled to just chop if you’re doing all the other work yourself? I’ve just done a few sums in heavy first cut ryegrass seeds I think it costs up about £16/ac including depreciation fuel and labour

That sounds cheap. How much fuel do they use we use around 5.3 litres per acre
Guessing around 6-7 litres an acre, remember being surprised thinking it would be more. He's lifting just over 10 acres/Hr. Pretty heavy late crops, we just do 2 cuts per year.

The advantage of having own machine is your not waiting for him to arrive, we've been lucky up till now and haven't been let down.

If you are mowing and raking then arguably you are in control of the bulk of the job and the parts which take the time. Also it's beneficial if those are done by a person who knows the fields well and can spend the time mowing around the trees or getting in the corners or knows how close to the fence they want to go.

How big is your pit and what are you using on it? 10 acres / hour is a lot of grass arriving very quickly 😂

I think that’s true until you get the big banging noises when something goes wrong then you’d be begging for a trailed machine to fix instead 😂

we have a JF1350 and a JD6155R in front of it, we chop 16’ at a time and as the pit man I am the bottle neck.

Be interesting to see how much grunt a 1350 would stick and how much grass you could get it to blow. A 155R would be the minimum would it?

No idea what max power it could take, think I’ve seen a 1460 with a quad track in front of it so 1350 would stand up to similar I’d imagine.

Before we had the 6155r we pulled it with a 4cyl JD 6430. Again it was able to handle 16’ of thick first cut grass without any issue.
