Using 2 Sims in one phone, one contract, one payg

Does both Sims have to be one or the other.
The issue:
SIM at moment has a very low data allowance, but endless calls and texts.
Until I know how much extra data I be better of with without changing my monthly bill i was thinking of putting a second sim in just for the data usage.
Would I have to keep going to settings and changing the SIM id like to use data from or will it just switch over when the first limit comes to its limit.

Seems like over complicating life,

I see carphone warehouse offering a vodaphone unlimited calls, unlimited text with 30GB 4G data for £8/month, You need to be a real heavy data user to need more than that surely?

On my phone you can set which card to prioritise for calls and/or data use. My phone is nowt special so I expect it would be the same for all reasonably decent phones.
Doubt that the phone cares if it is a payg, monthly or a mix

I have 2 SIMs in my phone, a contract and PAYG.
I have very poor network coverage in my area.
So have 2 sims from the 'best' networks in my area.
on android you can set either sim as data or no data, then I have a default text/call out sim card.
So it's quite flexible (on my phone anyway)
People can ring me on either number (which ever happens to work)
But I only use data on the contract SIM (in my case) (but I could make it go the other way around if i wanted)

Not bad at all...I'll have to look into that fr me,
this time it's for someone else, they are really only now getting into using the data side so his contract has just been rolling over and over since I don't know when, actually, it's that long, his SIM card is the original size, had to be trimmed down to fit his smartphone.
I just thought this was an easier option to get more data without having to change his contract.
My thinking is, as he's no internet at home other than his data allowance on his phone, after a bit hell look into a tablet or chrome book that could take a sim., so could take the second sim out and use that.

I tried Lebara on the MSE offer at 49p a month but found it wouldn't do WiFi calling so got myself an O2 sim which did.
Kept the Lebara sim as I thought I could afford the 49ppm
Both sims are 'contract'
When my Lebara reached the end of its bargain period, I ditched it and got another for the extortionate cost of 99ppm
I tend to use the Lebara for data as the O2 data signal is pretty rubbish - but, it's my main number so I keep it for voice calls.
I've now found out that I can make Lebara do WiFi calling!

I have a Samsung dual sim Android phone.
I can set the settings so that the one sim is for phone / SMS and the other sim is for data. Or you can have one sim for phone / SMS and data.

A bit late, but there's Unlimited data on Smarty for £20/month (no contract) if that helps.

If you use USwitch etc. I think you can get a deal on that. I got 40GB for £8/m.
