Village Fete

Just been asked to put on a small stand at the village fete to do a stand about farming .

Easy enough to have a couple of ewes and lambs in a pen with a bit of a write up on them and how they are managed. Pop a tractor there with an implement of some sort behind it.

Couple of idiot boards outlining the farming year as far as arable/livestock/dairy are concerned.

What else would grab peoples attention without costing silly money or taking ages to set up?

Target audience is children, make it of interest to them and they drag mum and dad to you.
Having samples of a crop and what it becomes is good, like wheat and a loaf etc.
Explain importance of the red tractor emblem and the such like crop assurance to the grown ups.
But the main thing I find at such events is 'be approachable' and look like you are enjoying the day.

I'm sure the hse and other agency spoilsports will be along shortly to give you many reasons why you shouldn't do this

Very true but tractor will stay locked and not moved and no one will go near sheep to touch them.

Just think it might be a good PR opertunity for me and might get some lamb sales of the back of it.....

The HGCA have some good posters with the farming year for different crops. They send them out if you ask.

Good shout, will get on to them.

Maybe have buckets of wheat, barley, linseed, etc to see if people know what they are and how they get used.

Do EBLEX do similar posters I wonder?

At some of the festivals there was a cardboard cow with an udder and children could have a go at milking - very popular. I have a feeling it belonged to the NFU so may be worth a phone call.

I made a stack of join the dots (a pig, obviously) for children. Find a simple outline of an animal and print it, then copy over it with dots. Lots of dots, then make lots of copies. The children were asked to find the animal, colour it in, add a sun etc and the results were hung on the stall. Got a lot of children interested of all ages.

For the adults, find a bit of kit, a tool, a part etc and get them to guess what it is for. Some of the guesses will have you in stitches!
