We had CODD introduced in some bought ewes, managed to control it in them but a ram got infected and then spread it gradually into other rams.

This August something had to be done so I looked on Vet Joe Angells research and micotil was recommended, twice, two weeks apart.

Vets sourced iirc Apatil generic and the rams were shipped to the vets twice to be injected in the trailer.

Went from half the rams badly infected to clear.

I think Micotil is readily available in Northern Ireland. It’s bloody good at clearing up foot rot. Obviously the vet needs to administer over here!;)

Any Oxytetracycline based antibiotic is best for foot rot, alamycin, engymycin, terramycin are all oxytet based.
Best way is to jab and spray with oxytet antibiotics, DON'T trim and isolate lame ones until they are sound if possible. Keep track of tag numbers and any that repeatedly get lame, cull.

If it's really bad scald it's also worth a jab too as it's the precursor to footrot so best to nip it in the bud. Mild scald should be easily cured with oxytet spray or by footbathing.

I’ve tried others for years but never sorted the problem. Now lameness is below 1% without vaccines. Only other main changed I’ve made is I now bolus all ewes twice a year with Mayo the zinc may be helping also
I’ve changed to the Mayo bolus this year, one of the reasons was the zinc to (hopefully) help with the feet

I got told by my vet and other various experts that an amoxicillin based product is best for footrot etc? Everyone seems to have their own preferences and it’s what ever works for them

We work with Fiona Lovatt, a lameness expert and she tells us oxytet for first port of call and PenStrep if thats not working.
