Whining 6480!

09 6480 dyna6 5500 hours. When I lift off throttle going downhill loud whining noise coming from backend. It has recently had damper plate done, mechanic has stripped back end down completely and replaced all diff bearings but still making noise. So we're completely stumped. No filter lights coming on everything working fine. Would like to get it sorted before it develops and causes more serious problem.

Any ideas?

No its not driver whining.

Our 58 6499 does that too, not sure why. Been told by the dealer it's nothing to worry about, lots of them do it. Doesn't fill you with confidence though

No. Did it just start or has it always done it?

I don't remember it doing it when it was new, but it went in for some work on the gearbox so they split it about 2 years back and it seemed to get gradually worse. A neighbour has 99's and they are the same.

Sounds to me as though the back lash on the diff is incorrectly set or wear on Crown wheel/pinion

My perkins engined 6480 started to do this easily a yr before i sold it but made no diff to it otherwise.
A Reconned PH did a similar noise but that was under load & it was most def the two gears that was causing that.
So unsure about the tractors diff......

It was the diff. Teeth chipped on the gears. The dealer I traded it into phoned rather annoyed because whoever he sold it too was complaining.
