Wind speeds

Trying to move our wind turbine project forward we have DECC wind speed of 8.4m/s at 25m,we are wanting to lease out the site but the developers have came back with a wind speed of 5.9m/s from a company called Digital Engineering,so what was a very attractive site is now marginal, has anyone else had any dealings with Digital Engineering and if so have there figures been accurate, site is very exposed, always windy, top of 700ft ridge with no obstructions for miles around.

Is there any other Turbines nearby or weather stations.? You may be able to get some data from them. What methodology are Digital Engineering using to estimate windspeed?

As you have said 8.4M/S at 25m is an absolutly terrific windspeed, I have never heard of such a wide difference between NOABL (DECC) and actual windspeed.

I purchased windspeed Data for my site from MET Office (Virtual Met Mast) cost an arm and a leg and was about 0.4/m/s lower than NOABL

What size turbine are you thinking of ? The developer sounds as if he is trying it on

What height is the 5.9m/s at. Our hill top site is 6.5 m/s at 10 mtrs so plenty of wind for 2 x 250 kw turbines just need the friendly bank to finance it and the planners to approve it.

5.9 m/s at 30 mtrs is very low I would suggest cutting the developer out of the equation and do it yourself. I have been told once you have planning finance becomes easier but as yet I have not had a queue of financiers knocking at the door.

Hi

We would be happy to work with you, have a look on our website.

So am I right in thinking say 100k of annual generation less 10k annual maintenance less 10k insurance less 15k land rental charge total direct costs 35k. Would leave 65k net profit on 50% JV which would give 32.5k share of profit. This would then give the farmer fixed rent of 15k plus variable share of profit of 32.5k on an original investment of 115k plus 50% cost of grid connect fee.

Hi

Vestas V27 @ 6ms =411mwh = £102,000
Maintenance £4000
Insurance £1500
Net profit £96,000

Farmer 50% £48,000 per year
Costs are
Turbine £230,000 plus additional materials and services.
Everything is split 50/50

Kind Regards

So you expect the farmer to rent you the land for nothing. Hardly an equal 50/50 joint venture when the real asset is Location Location Location.

Hi

Your outcome income was the same.
Thats because we do not mark anything up.
We pay for all the planning and provide everything at cost there is no markup.
Our numbers end with the farmer getting a payback in under 3 years on a 225kW if we can get a 500kW in which is only £65,000 more then the pay back is very fast.

Also the land owner is partnering with a company with an Electrical Director with vast experience on renewables upto 3MW and exporting to the grid at 11,000 Volts.
The idea was that we both brought Somthing to the joint venture.
If the land owner wants a fixed amount plus a percentage, then that could be negotiated.

Kind regards

I can see you both bring something to the table . Planning for my 2 x 250 kw turbines is 3k call it 5k or 10k if I have to go to appeal. Whereas rental income at 15% so contribution to JV in lost income 7.5% times 25 years. So 10k verses 187.5k. Not my idea of a fair joint venture.

. How can you get through planning for 3K,???. Surely the LPA planning fee will be over 1K then all your reports LVIA, Ecology and on........, 15K at least

Quick google reveals an awful lot of cheap old Vesta's around. 85,000 euro's is nearly making it pocket money

Dont forget Balance of Plant works & Foundation that will be ITR of 100K if it is an easy install, 60K Grid , the Turbine itself is only part of the cost, all the other works are to do whether its a recon unit or new. Thats where the refurbished machine route may falter, Will the Bank finance a recon turbine??
