    Second wheat varieties

As a distraction to the soggy non existent spring drilling programme, I'm looking ahead to the autumn and want to reduce my spring cropping area, currently about 1/3 of the farm thanks to blackgrass. Winter barley for feed isn't really any good for blackgrass control in terms of herbicide...

    Soil Sampling

The Soil Framework Directive has now been extended. Whereas a licence was needed to move soil from one site to another, which was first established in 2009 in Safeguarding our soils: A strategy for England., this now includes removing soil for testing. If you collect soil for nitrogen...

Hello. Anyone used this service with a good result. Every time I speak to them I get different responses and seem sceptical they would be able to advise anything useful. It's supposed to be funded but speaking to a sac advisor he said it will cost more than the funded element therefore I will...

Government support for farmers announced today

Did I hear right!!!? Millions coming our way to improve our IT etc so that we have less reliance on foreign workers? and better outlets for food we can't sell? Apart from installing robots, I can't see, on the face of it, what impact this would have on the dairy industry. What about other sectors?

    Charging for precision farming data?

As a contractor, I am increasingly getting requests for data , mainly yield maps by agronomy firms. I also have a friend who does a lot of soil sampling and he is finding the same. Soil samples

Got most of the farm sampled recently, pH, indicies and Organic matter. Makes quite interesting reading, P and K indicies are generally 3-4, couple of low K values, around 2, in fields cut twice last year which is expected. Most interesting though is the soil OM. A range between 5.1% and 12.4%...

FT - The dubious climate gains of turning soil into a carbon sink

Posted elsewhere but might as well post it here too. FT today. Bit of a read, but just shows how utterly fekked up all of this is. One bit stands out: Smith, the University of Aberdeen professor, says carbon sequestration can buy food suppliers “time to decarbonise the rest of their supply...

What to do with 100 acres / 40 hectares - SFI??

Hi We only have a small farm that until now the land 40 hectares was rented out to a local dairy farm for about £200/acre, it is all currently down in short term grass leys and they were claiming all the BPS. Is there any SFI options that would be better than this? I am waiting for a call back...
