Rewilding or this …

Over 3000 acres of solar panels proposed on the Sainted Isle. So big that the planning decision is taken away from the Council and indeed Welsh government and decided in Westminster

I know that Anglesey gets promoted as the “Energy Island” but this is taking the p!ss
Am I right in saying that’s about 1.5% of Anglesey’s total land area put down to solar panels in one go?

Google has total area as 176,600 acres (of which I own/farm very little) so actually more like 1.8% in one hit

One big mother of a solar park. See it from space

Ceri if only? The big trouble, is just like other industries, as you lose mass here its more than taken up my imports, just look at steel and most other? but farming its numbers, as numbers of "active" farmers decline so do all the support services that support the industry, such as in livestock farming, vets abbatoirs, corn merchants etc, livestock markets, so its not good at all?

Used to drive by this place a fair bit. It's not the kind of land you would want to farm organically. It's barley baron country that in reality would still be chalk downland had artificial fertilisers never arrived.

It being put back to grass and trees is no big deal in the scheme of things. Same as Knepp- who gives a fudge in reality? Industry is potentially 10,000 tonnes better off in my view.

Rewilding has been going on in the Scottish Highlands for years.Tens of thousands of acres but they are now realising that without livestock all they are doing is creating an environmental desert. The more forward thinking ones are now starting to reintroduce cattle and honestly you would think it was a brand new idea. A friend of mine is taking full advantage and the area where he has his cows is the only area to see an increase in biodiversity and bird life.

Be big opportunities for the next generation. Livestock farming will be the new buzzword, like pastoral environments haven't created ideal habitats for a millenia.🙄

That's a phrase that puzzles me. I'm sure that 30+ years ago we were told that there were spy satellites in space that could read a newspaper if you laid it flat, and now you need five square miles to be big enough to spot it 🤔

I remember reading a spy book back in the 70s or 80s that claimed the satellite could focus on a Russian farmer having a wee.

I was so impressed that I’ve taken care ever since (albeit the lens would have to be Hubble strength to see the old pipe these days)

Who gives a f**k? How about the taxpayer that's being forced to pay for it?

I don't know about you, but I can think of far better things to spend taxpayer's money on than chucking £500k plus a year at Knepp and £300K a year at this place for them to turn into scraggy scrubland whilst doing just about enough farming that they can qualify for Agricultural Property Relief on IHT when the time comes.

We're not applying for SFI but a neighbour says their land (50+acres accepted back in Feb) will be IHT free i.e. APR and ABR will be applied to non-productive land in schemes.

Anyone confirm? You know some say one thing and it ain't always true.

I agree, tax payers money should not be involved in this (or any other agricultural activity), though that is a separate argument. I also think inheritance tax should be binned. That would stop people investing in fudging land of all things just to avoid it.

Find other ways to get the tax out of people whilst they are alive. The USA in some states has annual property taxes on assets, that includes cars I understand. So milk folk for owning a Range Rover instead?

It’s a lovely spot there, putting any thoughts of jealousy of my own of wanting to own it firmly to one side then I can’t see much wrong with what they are doing

It would be some pretty thin soil that’s naturally calcereous grassland & that’s rare habitat so a worthy project

If it’s restored well then good look to them

I mainly have issue with the “rewilding” tag being stuck on it, it’s more of a “restoring” project, there’s nothing wild about restoring a managed landscape ?
