Dear Farming Forum users,
NorZet is proud to present an alternative for blade/hub repair for the original E-3120 wind turbine! After 3 years of research, running over 670 simulations, 12 months of data collecting and processing we have developed and new rotor system that is equipped with hydraulic tip brake system. The New Rotor System has been running on a test E-3120 wind turbine in Cornwall since March 2023 delivering excellent results in both performance and load reduction. At the moment this system is dedicated to turbines equipped with the rEsolve bedframe and shaft developed by Britwind and being now sold by Earthmill.

To see it in action follow

We are still working on a solution for turbines equipped with original/not hollow shafts so stay tuned!

Hello Everyone,

As the winds are quite high we thought to do some testing on our new system. Results are fascinating!

Conditions on site:
- wind speed 5 min average 16.5 m/s
- instentainous production at braking start 85,8 kW
- wind speed at brake event start 14.3 m/s

Any affiliation with Dutch company bestwatt/bestwind? They have the same tipbrake.
Hello Gerbert,
Thanks for your comment.

No, there is no connection between NorZet and Bestwind/Bestwatt manufacturer.

Tip brake systems has been used in wind turbines since the 80'. Endurance Wind Power used it in the X series model (225kW machine).

From all at NorZet we would like to wish you and your families a Happy New Year 2024!

We are delighted to share, that our New Rotor System managed to close the year 2023 faultless and generating 31,060 kWh just in December!
This makes it the third best, monthly result since the turbine was installed in 2013!

What is more, turbine has stopped twice due to high wind speeds (gusts of 30+ m/s) and the system worked as expected allowing the machine to restart when winds eased.

what rating is this turbine?

That is a superb output
10 years ago it was marketed as 55 to make it look good, generator is 73, ofgem call it 80. Mine spots over 100. Take you pick....

Nonetheless 30MWh in a month is good going - I've only done it twice (at 20m above sea level). Dec was 26 something.

Working on 80kW I'm just under 25% capacity factor over nearly 12 years.

Hello e3120,

Thank you for your comment.

You are correct. As per Ofgem specification it is a 80kW machine as it is capable of generating that output continuously in peak wind conditions.
Manufacturer rated it at 50kW at 9.5 m/s which is expected for class IIIA machine therefore both values are correct.

Have a great weekend.

We are thrilled to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the NorZet retrofit rotor for the E-3120 wind turbine successfully operating in windy Cornwall, UK. We're proud to have a satisfied customer, and excited to announce that the next rotor systems are already in production.

Prototype Testing Demonstrates Success

During extensive prototype testing, we evaluated power generation, system loads, and the functionality of the active tip brakes. The results were highly positive:

  • Power Performance Maintained or Improved: Compared to the original Endurance rotor system, power generation remained consistent or even showed improvement.
  • Loads Within Expectations: Measured system loads aligned with our engineering predictions.
  • Enhanced Braking System: Perhaps most importantly, the hydraulically powered active tip brake system replaces the often-problematic pitch system. This design offers several key benefits:
    • Slow and safe braking.
    • Reduced wear on the gearbox and coupling, leading to lower maintenance costs and increased lifespan.

The NorZet Retrofit Solution

The retrofit rotor system comprises several key components:

  • New blades equipped with active tip brakes
  • A robust cast hub design
  • A reliable hydraulic system for activating the tip brakes
  • A control add-on unit for seamless integration
