Ghost farmers - secret helpers.

I have been watching lots of trash American car shows and came across the term "ghost mechanic". This is effectively the backup crew that do all the real work off camera while the divas stay clean.

It got me thinking....

My wife runs a small pig farm and our daughters and myself chip in as needed to keep things ticking over. We decided that we are the "Ghost Farmers" beavering away in the background.

We pretty much keep out of sight and all have other jobs, but without us a lot of things wouldn't get done.

Anybody else got a team of ghosts running the farm?

We also made shirts :)

We managed to enlist some friends and their families into our ranks this week - they came for a visit but were quickly put to work finishing off a conversion to one of our barns and then out feeding the pigs.

Its amazing how much non farmers enjoy manual labour for a day!

Often a partner/siblings/kids/parents in the back ground, to help things along. Oft taken for granted.

"Faming is a team sport".
It's certainly a team sport, I'm going job share at the end of the year so I can spend more time helping - being away on ships is more of a curse now.

When I started farming nearly 50yrs ago there were 5 working farms and 2 estates all employing 2,3 or 4 farm workers all around my holding , those same farms ( i knew most of the workers )are now all contract farmed , I now know none of the operators and just see massive machinery come and a few hrs later dissappear I call those farms " Ghost Farms " thousands of acres you can see why rural communities are dying
