The Herd Manager will take the management lead of a 350 head organic dairy herd, looking to achieve 6000 litres off an all-year-round grass based system. Based in the Shropshire countryside, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the herd, managing a small team you will strive to achieve optimum herd performance whilst maintaining a high level of animal welfare and husbandry. Role Responsibilities:
- To manage the day-to-day operations of the dairy herd to maximise results and performance
- To manage the grazing system, to support and optimise production
- To manage the milking routine, monitoring production level and milk quality
- To monitor and manage the herd health and fertility
- To manage and oversee the health and welfare of youngstock and calves
- To maintain accurate records on herd health, milk production and breeding
- To proactively manage and develop a small team
Essential:
- Proven experience of milking cattle
- Proven knowledge and practical experience of year-round, grass based dairy systems
- Practical knowledge and experience of dairy farm duties e.g. heat detection, foot trimming, calving
- An understanding and knowledge of cattle breeding
- Confident in using and analysing data from farm management software systems e.g. Uniform
- Excellent communication skills, with the skills to lead and manage a team effectively
- Driven and committed with a positive mindset, eager to embrace new business developments
- Highly organised with a strong eye for detail
- The ability to work in a team and independently when required
- A practical and strong work ethic, flexible to support the daily needs of a farming business
- Full UK driving licence
- Knowledge and or interest into organic production
