son reckons he has found one of the higher paying schemes, that we can apply to our Scheduled monument field, 8 acres, the only other one, is low input grassland, lets hope he's right. Can't do much with it, and other than SFP, no money to maintain it.

there's a lot of very attractive payment rates in the SFI, and we are searching through, for best paying, that will fit our farm, and why not ? Fwag booked in.

l give it 3 yrs, before things radically alter, food inflation, and probably food security, will convince a broke guv, to a massive rethink, and possible reversal.
Except where the land has been planted with trees....... or will the FC be given the 👆when the Rotavators roll?

At which point the GFC module becomes compulsory and the amount needed for trees/ nature goes from 5% to 10%.
Fait accompli.

both are dependant on food price/supply

if its short and expensive, forget the environment, hungry voters are a big problem for those that seek re-election

if food/supply, cheap and plentiful, hit the rates right back.

in fact, whatever happens they will be cut, firstly if food/supply dear, cut back to discourage farmers from SFI renewal, so they can claim they are still doing 'something' to the zealots.

and the second, even simpler, they cannot afford to keep paying so much.

the trouble with a lot of SFI, the payments are not enough for the hassle of doing it.
the example above, you need a lot of hectares to get a sensible amount of money back.

we got a bit excited over a water board grant, £2,000 ha, when we sat down and worked it out, with the 'rules' about what qualifies, we were at about 500 square meters, and some of that was on our best ground.

like the hedge schemes, cut every 2 years, what you gain, is nearly lost, in the cutting of 2 years growth.
amazing how one can change their minds, sons been delving into the possibilities.

he is now up to double the original SFP, the options are pretty straight forward, but the management actions, can really push it up, soil sampling, hedge assessment, pesticides etc.

one thing is for certain, l wouldn't have had the patience to trawl through the pages and pages of options/rules etc.

one l/lord, who claims the SFP, was pretty well gobsmacked, after son told him of the possible earning potential, on his plot.

well having only glanced at these forthcoming new proposals the one that stands out to me is the £732 /ton for sprinkling some grain at upto a ton over 2 ha i.e @ 5 acre . so if I knock of the cost of trundling up and down the tram lines once a month over the 3 winter months lets say £8 /acre ,a ton of grain to feed the birds would cost defra or rather they would pay just over £700 this is of course the same grain that Iwould sell happily into the trade wether for export human consumption or feed at less than a third of that price and on my patch of ' 150 ha of eligible crop amount to 75 t at £ 700/t so in rough figures a near on £500/ t x 75 =£37500 uplift on grain sales over my 150 ha or cos im old and still work in acres. So if defra reckon a ton of grain is worth£700 as bird food against a ton at £ 200 to feed the hungry humans am I totally wrong to reckon the country is going f----- daft

you can boost your 'take' from SFI, by studying the management options, for example, £5 per 100 metres, 1 side of your hedge, x2 if double, just by noting down what shrubs are in it, per year, without doing anything more. Planting a tree every 100 metres, or leaving taller bits, all add up.
