SFI 24 no till payment

Would a DD payment be double funding when there is already a grant for buying a direct drill? Why not just increase the grant for the direct drill and avoid the whole sketchy arguement about what ,how long and when DD has achieved an SFI aim.. Flexibility in crop establishment is critical on clay soils.. This thread proves that and it is hit and miss especially in spring..
Autumn DD of a companion crop which acts as a cover crop and then spray out the companion and keep the main crop in spring is the most ethical way to fund DD payments?? It also works on most soil types..

Just play what’s infront of you. Pontification about ethics of it is pointless.

No it wouldn’t be double funding.

One payment is for buying a direct drill, but you are not required to use it only own it.
The other payment is for using a direct drill (or broadcasting seed). You don’t actually have to own a drill to do that as you could use a contractor (or fert spreader).

It was just a thought! No one wants to pay for the same actions twice... Now that is a very sensible idea leaving the DD in the shed this spring... my 4m powerharrow was hiding in the brambles and the tilth it created on capped clay to 1 inch was beautiful.. structure below 1 inch still intact..Direct Drilling at it best🤗

As of now, the specifics regarding what constitutes "no till" in the eyes of SFI (Sustainable Farming Initiative) are still being clarified. However, it seems that there's some flexibility in the methods allowed, including direct seeding into stubble as well as lower disturbance tine or disc methods.

The Claydon grain and fertilizer system, for instance, appears to meet the grant specifications, particularly with the leading tine applying the fertilizer. This suggests that innovative approaches like this may align with the goals of SFI in terms of reducing soil disturbance and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Interesting point.
Paying any of us the choose to DD a per ha payment each year is on thing.

But it doesn’t sound anything like as impressive that at the next COP meetings, our Government can boast that is has grant aided to our farmer the building of ‘x’ amount of DD drills, having invested in ‘y’ billion pounds worth of funds to help achieve its so-called Net Zero target (Which therefore still allows everyone else to enjoy their 3 foreign holidays a year!).

How they will react and what spin they will be able to put on the fact that this will cause a massive hit on yields where inexperienced DD farmers suddenly find that DD isn’t that simple, we will have to wait and see to find out.

When that inevitably happens and we suddenly find that our Home produced self-sufficiency food %age has dropped, will they grant aid the sales of new Ploughs and Combis?

I can’t wait!

No because drill prices would go up even more.
