Too cold

I lost a few lambs last year after I turned them out I was in a pretty bad mood about it for a while
It came snow and a colds wind and it just clobbered a fair few
I delegated myself the job of picking them up and bringing any ewes in that had lost a lamb or both and set lambs onto them
Didn’t want to demoralise the staff it was only the first week then it was ok after that
I’m to the point of no f*cks are given now, been trying to set lambs onto shearlings and the milk has gone off them they’ve been in the adopter so long so theve been turned away to the fell. Hate to see things go away with nothing. knacker man in at dinner time to remove the heap and 30 minutes later there was another dead in the shed. The sooner April is over the better.

I’m struggling to get them away the ones I’ve set on this time. I’m like you I set everything a lamb on I possibly can but it would appear here some definitely don’t want them. Some are taking lambs set onto them no bother but if I was to guess I bet I’m having a 50% success rate when it’s usually nearer 80

These had premature/ non viable lambs right at the start. Lot of ewes not wanting 1 lamb this time for some strange reason. Wouldn’t care if they were lean and no milk but it’s quite the opposite with these ones this time.

Been 50 50 here this time. Got 30 ish with buckets on heads look hideous but tbh that’s 30 lambs not on powder keeping me sane

That’s a symptom of ewes being pished off isn’t it?
That wet weather for all that time basically knackered the job in many ways

Yes we don't want to demoralise the staff , we have seen it before to a degree, I must admit I was glad when I could hear my nephew whistling one of those terrible bad days!

Had the knacker man in this morning for 2 ewes….the vehicle he always comes to us with is a 14 foot triple axle box trailer he pulls behind the pickup. Said the other day he had 4.8 ton in! Let slip he gets 40p a kilo for it

Does it work? I’ve tried a couple not sure I had any success
They normally have a day in stocks then I run out of stocks, so I let them out of stocks and put bucket straight over. Do a day or two in a small pen then into a bigger pen of bucket heads. Bucket heads normally stay in for a week or two all together then tipped out into the most secluded field possible. If there are 30 with buckets on their heads it looks a bit more obvious

Week three here and you struggle to get around everything I find, so miss a few things. Lost a couple today that should have survived but to busy doing other things, turning out, bringing an odd one back in etc etc.

Something's definitely wrong. We've had bad weather as usual but the south has been hammered, from the Borders down. Sunny today and only drizzle early morning. Met says no rain now for a week.
We started lambing with a few days of hail and sleet, but then it got reasonably better, cold and rain but not lamb killing weather.

I just think everyone is tired and had had enough even before lambing started. We knew what we were in for when the sheep had so much clash on them, we might not have it all worked out but it’s there in the back of our minds. There’s a few folks said to me before lambing they had no heart in the job this time.

I normally get revved up for lambing but it’s just bumbled along this time
