Unlock Wild Spaces - Scaling Responsible Access to Nature & Wild Camping

Hello!

We are Alex & Tom, two lifelong friends on a mission to revolutionise access to nature, camping & outdoor recreation in the UK.

Over the past 12 months, we have been working hard to build, test and prove the concept (with some of the people who will read this post!) of a network of Wild Spaces, designated spots on private land unlocked exclusively for CampWild, a community seeking to escape to the wild.

Our purpose is to enable more people to experience the adventure, benefits & joy of being immersed in nature, at a time when we have become the most nature-depleted nation in Europe! Having grown up on the fringes of Dartmoor in rural Devon, we understand the importance of reconnecting people to their roots and spending time in nature. This project has been an incredible journey already and we have been blown away by the level of positivity shown across the country. We are confident that this is the right time, in the right way, to unlock the beauty of your land & we invite you to help us.

At face value, we imagine wild camping on your land doesn't sound that attractive. We expect you immediately have questions on matters like control over access, planning, waste, liability, behaviour, existing land use & more. We have spent months working to resolve those questions, collaborating with farmers, wildlife trusts & conservationists, planning lawyers and industry experts to build a platform, community and value system that represents a step change for wild camping on private land.

We have a growing network of over 50 spaces and our goal is to scale this to over 1000, spread out across the country and building relationships with farmers and local communities across every county. Wild camping will be the most popular adventure, however, we are working closely with healthcare providers, wellness practitioners, creatives, charities and youth programmes to look at many other uses of your spaces, scaling access to nature.

So What Are Wild Spaces?
Wild Spaces come in all shapes and sizes and can be literally anywhere. Beside streams, on upland farms, in corners of meadows, orchards and woodland, far into plantations or perched on hillsides. All that matters is that they are intimate in nature, away from it all. We want to work with you to unlock under-used areas of your land that could become a haven for our community, to allow the right people onto your land, responsibly & sustainably. Your spaces will become classrooms in nature and every space is profiled to tell the stories of your land, family (if you agree), history, flora, fauna and future.

There are no facilities required. Simply, all you need to do is provide permission, access to and from the Wild Space and often a spot for parking. At all times, you have full control over availability, terms of access, rates & rules, enabled by our bespoke booking system. Our priority is to create spaces for camping under canvas & zero-impact recreation (wellness, creatives, therapy, learning), however, many of our hosts have also been able to unlock spaces that can cater to the growing community of campervans.

Importantly, Wild Spaces are not campsites. They are minimum effort, minimal impact, removing the baggage of managing or running a campsite.

Earn Passive Income
We have a rapidly growing community (with ambitions to grow to over 10,000 in the coming years) eager to experience nature, wild camping and the serenity of rural life and they're willing to pay for it! This is absolutely not going to make you millions, however, as a Wild Space host, you would have the full freedom to set your prices, with an average nightly fee ranging from £10-£20. And if your Wild Space is truly remarkable, campers are willing to pay a bit more for the privilege!

We will never take a penny of commission & there will never be any hidden fees. Our goal is always to remove barriers & support you in any way we can, including providing guidance, signage & answering any questions you have. We visit every single Wild Space to meet you and understand your land & farm before we work with you to bring your space to the community.

Safeguarding Your Interests
Your interests are of critical importance to the success of this project.

We have worked hard to strike the right balance between safeguarding your interests and protecting the spaces are are unlocking. We have been working with conservationists to minimise the impact on flora & fauna, including closing spaces during nesting periods of rare birds or rotating the use of spaces to reduce footfall & allow the ground to recover.

Ensuring the right people are on your land is crucial. We have spent a long time developing a comprehensive CampWild Code, which guides behaviour and ensures the control of how, when and who is able to access your Wild Spaces. We have default policies of no dogs, fires or human waste unless you agree otherwise and at all times, you have full control over availability, terms of access, rates & rules.

To ensure we can scale this in the right way, we have invested in a bespoke and secure booking platform, ensuring only CampWild members (the right people!) are able to find your Wild Space. Our booking platform notifies you of a booking & also incorporates our 'Snap In-Snap Out' system, in which members have to upload photos before & after their trip. This enables us to monitor the use & condition of your Wild Space & maintain the reputation of our community.

No Planning Required
You don't need planning permission to open a Wild Space on your land. You can permit our members to camp for up to 60 days a year, which conveniently covers most weekends during the spring and summer months. Additionally, we are working with planning lawyers to redefine what wild camping is on private land, given it falls beneath the requirements set out in the T&CPO, so watch this space!

Importantly, any members who book to stay at your Wild Spaces waive all liability & accept responsibility for any damage they cause on your land. This can then be layered over your existing public land liability and as this does not constitute the management or running of a campsite, your existing policy should not need to be changed.

Hopefully, this has gone a long way to answer a lot of the more obvious questions. However, if you would like to learn more, please head across to our website by clicking here. We are here to be criticised, challenged and contacted at all times. We welcome your feedback & really look forward to working with you. We are also very grateful to those of you who have already helped us to get to where we are, so if you are reading this, thank you!!

We cannot wait to hear from you and help you become a Host, to connect people to your land and the stories it holds. Help us unlock the nature, adventure & benefits your space can provide a community seeking an escape to the wild. Through camping, or simply the time and space to be present, your land will help reconnect us all to our roots.

Hi Tom and Alex,
Well done to come on here as a tiny minority who has come to tff not hoping for something for nothing. Looks like you've actually put effort into what you're promoting. Slight irony in encouraging the public to unspoilt nature spots in apparently the most nature depleted country in Europe, how do you propose human interference will benefit this? Picking a scab here, not at you or the venture. Personally I'd take that paragraph out. Half of me is all up for encouraging folk to engage with the countryside and to educate as to what really goes on in the sticks, not what some vegan blogger believes. The other half of me thinks those introduced to the countryside but go back with very little knowledge to their work in the city got us into to this situation in the first place. However, I'm very proud of the nature we have on the farm and on a limited basis would be interested. Could also be appealing to upland farmers, who have stunning, unspoilt land and little government support

Thank you Alex and Tom , website looks good and you've put alot of thought into it.
I've considered camping on a number of occasions but the extra work load / investment has put me off.
You guys have made a easier route into diversing farm income without expenditure.
The return may be modest but very little risked.
About to sign up on your website 👍

As someone who works on an estate with vast areas of open access land I’d approach this idea tentatively, the shocking lack of respect we put up with on a daily basis certainly makes us withdraw from any more access

We couldn't agree more and understand your approach, I am sure you have seen your fair share of this beahviour, particularly over the last few years. Creating an infrastructure that safeguards your land, operations and needs is at the core of the project and we have invested in ensuring we educate our members and are able to monitor both their behaviour and the areas of land they are using. Feel free to shoot us a direct message and more than happy to give you a call and talk you through our approach here as it is so key to the expansion of the project.

I'm just considering this, seeing as glamping, shepherds huts and caravan sites seem to have been done to death around here...

I know there's 60 days usage allowed without planning but we're in a national park so does that change anything?
Great question. Pop us an email on [email protected] and we can explain in detail. In short it wont change anything and is straight forward to set up.
