I was born and brought up in Yorkshire, the son and Grandson of farmers. The bleak beauty of the low foothills of the South Yorkshire Pennines forged the character of my family. I have written a book about growing up on our Yorkshire farm, now available on Amazon. It tells of hard times and the joys and sorrows of a farming life. It tells of the relentless seasons and of my father, a unique and remarkable man with an extraordinary sixth sense about his animals.
Life seemed much, much simpler then. Me and my brothers played out all day, coming back for our meals when we were hungry. Our parents never seemed the least bit concerned. In the evenings we might walk with Dad amongst his cattle. They would gently nudge him for attention. Have cattle changed?. Why do they seem so much more aggressive now?
Mum and Dad scrimped and saved to rent their first place and start to make a go of a farming life. Is it even possible for a young couple to do that these days? .
