We're just starting on a farmhouse renovation,

Thinking through the kitchen, are boiling water taps worth the expense? (They seem to have come down in cost quite alot since my sister looked in to them a few years ago and decided not worth the expense)

Also we're in quite a hard water area, just incase that could be a issue with the gubbins

No real experience of them. Wife had one in her house before we married, but it was aleady in the house when she bought it and she never actually used the boiling aspect, or even had it turned on.

If you do go for one I wouldn’t bother with any other make than quooker, I think your looking at £1500 ish that includes the water softener, need a fair bit of room under the sink for it all so bear that in mind when designing the kitchen, it does all fit in a 600mm sink base but the plumbing has to be tidy

Have an old standard type 7 litre quooker here (has its own tap and not part of a freshwater tap). 12 years old and going strong although it does need a new valve as it drips a little when you use it.

Be a bit careful as the one we have wouldn't pass building inspection I believe, something to do with the water actually boiling as it's coming out of the tap.

wouldn't be without it now but it does take some of the tradition out of making a cup of tea...... the chat (chance to grab a slice of cake more like) while you wait for the kettle to boil.

just remember ,boiling water taps are not wras approved ,and as you cannot dispence water at that temprature legally ,but most people just crack on ,i asked my plumber to fit one and his reply was nope ,if somebody comes into your house and gets scalded you can be sued
also running costs in a relativly busy household is 1.50 to 2.00 a day

the real question is what happened to the 'real exmoor dave' ...you know the one running around the moors bare chested dragging a bracken bashing device whilst consuming vast amount of cake:love:.....from that to becoming to genteel to boil a kettle:oops:

It's social media. A guy starts off as a lowly hill farmer, quad dog and stick you know the real salt of the Earth. But the next thing you know he's on TV and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Harry, Meghan and the Kardashians. Hot tap is probably for his Beverly Hills Mansion as he doesn't want to be outdone by his neighbours- Schwarzenegger and Stallone who keep pestering to borrow his quad bike and eating his cake.

Everyone I know that had one have had issues and most have failed within three years so we decided against and just had an electric point under sink for dishwasher and maybe one at a later date.

The taps for them are not cheap either if you want a combined three way tap with a lockout for the boiling water. Either that or a seperate tap but stainless steel sinks dont have provision for ones so you either need to go quartz or granite tops with belfast or similar and set the taps in the tops. We were building on a serious budget with most things done diy so didn’t really have the cash for one either but I do think they could be handy on a farm when someone’s around most of the day

Above post just reminded me, have to careful with your choice of sink as boiling taps have been known to cause thermal shock and crack the bowl, mainly on corian type built into the worktop ones, they can be fitted with a stainless steel bottom to combat it
