'Arkell vs pressdram' comes to mind.
I’ve read Private Eye for years, but I was unaware of the specifics of the case.

From Wikipedia:

“In the case of Arkell v Pressdram (1971), the plaintiffwas the subject of an article.[64] Arkell's lawyers wrote a letter which concluded: "His attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of your reply." Private Eye responded: "We acknowledge your letter of 29th April referring to Mr J. Arkell. We note that Mr Arkell's attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of our reply and would therefore be grateful if you would inform us what his attitude to damages would be, were he to learn that the nature of our reply is as follows: f**k off."[65]The plaintiff withdrew the threatened lawsuit.”

Total bovine excrement!

I've flown a few sparrowhawks, back in the day before falconers started weighing them to assess condition, and a whole sparrow is just about enough for the daily ration, so 360/annum/hawk. Even that is going to be an over estimation as the males weight about 25% less so will presumably consume less than one sparrow a day. 🙄
your working sparrowhawk isnt feeding a brood, it also spends much of its day teathered and enclosed rather than flying and fighting off the cold...or foraging for fun and only consuming their favorite parts of the kill the truth may lie in the middle 🤷‍♂️ Ps I dont want to see an eradication of any predator be it bird, badger, fox, cat or dog, just an honnest assessment of how their populations are interacting with pray species populations.

You clearly have more experience than I do. Can't argue with that.

Just noticed this thread and initially wasn't sure if it was a health issue or if someone had taken a fit of pique and torched his house!

Magazine has crowd funded it's case. There will be a link somewhere on TFF.

Well worth a few quid to see Packham gone from the BBC et al.... 🤞
The crowdfunding link is here
"We’re still paying for our lawyers, so here’s the obligatory crowdfunding link for those feeling generous: https://ko-fi.com/packham3"
If we can get Packham a kick in the pants, it has to be worth a few bob.
We all moan about him and the people who support him. Now we have the chance to actually take an active part in bringing down someone who has spent his life slating farmers and anyone else who engages in rural activities that he doesn't approve of. That is a long list of activities, but it seems he does have some off beat proclivities himself https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/13047174/chris-packham-tongue-kissed-fox/ 🤮

We don't all moan about him. I'm actually interested in wildlife and ecology.

Like many/most farmers, so do I. It is the environment I live and work in.

I don't need self serving egotists like Packham pushing his limited viewpoint, and affecting how I live and work.
Isn't everyone self serving?

Interesting that farmers have so much hatred for him. He's never been on my farm and I'm not sure his viewpoint need ever affect how I live or work.

Perhaps you know differently?

There are certain characters in the media that I absolutely can't stand, to the point that I have to turn them off. Some people must like them though.

These people are scientists. The only way to engage with them is with science.

You say above that Packham is a scientist. Yet for some reason he mainly uses emotional means and language in an attempt to force people to share his political views. If he was a scientist, surely he would be able to use scientific facts as as the basis of his points of view. There is little enough of this scientific brilliance in his rhetoric.
You also say that you are interested in wildlife and ecology - as if the rest of us are not. I am myself (and I do not know many British farmers that are not in some way) interested in such things. After all, their livelihoods depend on a healthy natural environment. It is possible (although you may disagree -as an accredited member of the awkward squad) to disagree with a BBC funded animal rights activist and self confessed deviant, and be interested in wildlife and ecology.
I and many like me who spend our time and our money involved in proper, active conservation, are not keen on being told we are wrongheaded by the likes of Mr. Packham while pushing his politically motivated attacks against those of us who live and breathe the natural world. Just because we do not all hold BSCs in Zoology from Southampton University, we are not to be discredited as being without knowledge or understanding. Having BSCs (or BBC platforms to crow from) is no guarantee of proper understanding of the rhythm of nature or confer intellectual authority over those of us who probably know more about the real world of environmental management than Mr Packham and his slack jawed acolytes.
With cheerleaders as gullible and offensive as you, I suspect that he is in more trouble than he thinks!
