Perkins 1000 series engine out of sanderson, 10000hrs on it working well but leaking oil from every were so new sump and timing case gaskets etc etc etc.

Thought i will just take rocker cover off and adjust the valves as bound to be well worn! and sure enough they were well worn at least 3 or 4 x times the gap they should be but then found the spring of the inlet valve on number 2 cylinder was broken!
And it was running fine like this! (2 springs per valve was the big outer spring that broke)

Bloodly lucky it didn't drop the valve and feck it all up!

Really didn't want to spend any more time than necessary on this old 10000 hrs engine cause it was border line on droping in a full refurbed unit if i went any deeper!
So quick scratch around to find some bar and bolt nuts and washers etc and mig them all together, bit of old rebar for the handle and bobs your uncle can now change all the valve springs and stem seals with out taking head off and creating more work on an already well run in engine!

Just got to make sure i don't drop a collit down the push rod holes! New springs etc coming tomorrow only a few quid something like £25 or so for 16 springs, 8 seals, and pack of 10 rubber olives for the rocker shaft (only needed 1 rubber)

Professional Bodgery:)
I'd be impressed had you not taken the engine out first.

The next logical question, how do you know when No2 or No3 is at the top .................

With the injectors still in place and the rocker shaft on the ground?

Easy set number 1 or number 4 so valve are on the rock.
Pistons 2 and 3 have to be on top dead then. Then do same in reverse for rest.

1 and 4 are moving up and down together (companion cylinders). So when 4 is rocking the valves (piston at the top) No.1 is about to fire, so is also at the top. But how does that help with 2 and 3 ................ (n)

You can compress the valves by hand and feel it hit the pistons anyway the springs are that weak

Good idea ...............
We put a spacer (heavy washer) under the spring/guide to tension the springs. Saves the piston having to drive the valve back up onto its seat ......
But you mightn't get away with that on the Perkins?

Have you come across any engines filling the combustion chamber with carbon? Leaves the piston hitting the inside of the head/valves? Have one at the minute and over a period of time it starts knocking, gradually gets worse, until the carbon is scraped off. Not burning excessive oil and starting on the button without heat?

A long fix would be to create a propper sticker that didn't just tell you to check wheel nuts and tyre pressures, but also the important information what they should be. So I think this classes as a quick bodge with a marker pen.

I wounder whether my father will switch the pressure guage to metric for checking the rear tyres

Hope he doesn't put 41 bar in ;)

4Bar1 sounds like an instruction to stop every fifth person entering.

The last time I saw writing the pressures above the wheels done professionally was on an ex-navy series III, which they hadn't sullied with funny foreign units or even the imperial units, just two numbers. I will try the bar in the middle though on the remaing trailers.

No sounds like needs new injectors and pump.
