I was originally on vista and went straight onto 8.1 ,,it took some figuring out ,mainly because the start icon had gone but Ive got my head round that now ,
As long as 10 doesn't get to complicated else Ill be teaching it some manners with something heavy

I've allowed my test machine to upgrade from Windows 7. Won't upgrade my main machine for maybe 6 months, chance to see if any major problems arise.

Upgrade went well. UI seems a bit lack-lustre. I guess that's part of it being an OS for all devices. Otherwise seems ok. Some of the settings seem a bit dumbed down. Luckily, I found my trusty 'full' control panel.
Shall see how it goes.

As I upgraded from Win7, I'm not sure how different it would be from a fresh install from scratch. May try that on a spare partition.

Got one computer which helpfully got the "Get Windows 10" widget thing popped up to get the free upgrade. Another computer doesn't get it though and after looking into it tonight, have discovered its running an "OEM licensed" version, so that one is not eligible for free upgrade apparently!

Why do MS have to make it so especially hard, just go the way of Apple and give the darn OS away

That's interesting, because I have three machines on W7, one of which is on 7 Starter [a nice Netbook] and this one I'm on now, which has what I suspect to be one of those OEM licenced things, because it was purchased to install on this Apple iMac.

One good thing is that W10 can be downloaded onto either an USB memory stick or to a DVD as well as just to a single machine, so multiple machines can be updated from one download. Apparently there is a version that includes 16 and 32 bit compatibility.

Hopefully as long as I can find the license key for them all, it will update OK. Also have three or four laptops running XP or Vista, but I'm not sure I'll bother updating those because they are seldom fired up these days and never connect to the internet. All important files are duplicated on the other machines anyway.

I've been trawling through this W10 upgrade stuff, and in order to get the "free" licence key from MS you have to upgrade from 7, 8 or 8.1 using that Get Windows 10 widget. The upgrade program is essential to get the free licence key for W10, no other way apparently other than buying a copy.

You can separately download the W10 ISO image (32 and 64 bit) as you say and install it, but unless you can get a licence key for it (freebie or bought) then it won't activate apparently.

The same sort of logic applies if you want to do a 'clean install' of W10 for free. First you have to use the upgrade program, then once upgraded you blow it all away and do a fresh clean install.....long winded but the only way if you really want a clean install rather than an upgrade over the top of W7 or 8.

Somehow MS licensing has worked out you've legitimately upgraded, so when you do the clean install on the same machine, it doesn't prompt for a license key again and activates fine.

I wonder why they make it more difficult than it ought to be to upgrade? It will only drive more people towards Apple.

While I prefer W7 to Apple OS X in many ways, the regular updating and security patches being downloaded and installed drives me potty. OS X is a revelation in comparison.

Sorry got halfway through typing on phone and fat fingers pressed the send key.

W7 is fine, but I only run it for stuff I have to; moved to OS X in 2007 and having been mostly using dos, windows and some Linux since 1992 it was all a bit alien, but got used to it and quite like it now. It's only taken 8 years!!!

That sounds like whatever browser you are using is freezing. Are you using the latest Internet Explorer or Firefox or Chrome or what? It could be just a matter of re-starting your computer or it could be a small incompatibility or even that you haven't got enough RAM in your 'puter.
Doubt if its anything serious or that won't get resolved within a few days with little if any intervention.
Try another browser. I like Chrome myself but use Apple Safari more often than not, which is equally good but won't work on Windows machines.
Frankly, there's little to choose between browsers these days.
