I'm not interested at the moment I'm afraid, we're just taking our bulls (all jersey) out and now just have to try and keep them out of the cows in somewhere else until 1st of May next year.

My herd is all spring calving jerseys but longer term I have grand plans to have a smaller autumn calving herd. This herd would essentially be a flying herd made up of all F1 crosses bred from the jersey herd and not calving until they are 29/30 months. I have 1 BF cross in the herd at the moment and some days I think I would quite like a while herd of them

If this plan ever comes together then then autumn F1 herd would probably all come from natural service bulls, probably BF, and would all be put to a blue bull each year with calves sold at a couple of weeks old so I would be looking for a regular supply of good Friesian bulls.

Can you tell us anymore about your herd? Production? System? Inputs? From the photos of your cows it looks quite a hard farm

How far the wrong side of the Tamar are you?
Hello cows and grass, sorry for the delay in reply, this is a hard farm! Wet, cold acid soil and exposed. The tenants before me had Holsteins, fed them on tmr and let the cows out to lie down on the grass! My cows are out as early as poss in feb or early march and calve mainly October till Christmas, strip grazing kale or fodder beet till end nov. Heifers average around 5000 and cows 7000@ 4.3 bf and 3.5 protein. Scc average 80, replacement rate 6-8%!

The jetters on de-laval are shite (y)

Give me swing down jetters any day.(y)

mine do fold up but have got used to going around them so dont bother

when i built my own abreast i drilled four holes in a piece of stainless and put short candle jetters through the holes ,then mounted the plate above the stall work upside down meaning the units washed in the same position as they were used for milking , all neat and tidy and worked a treat

it wasnt till the first milking that i realised i was using westfalia claws and shells on delaval jetters , luckily they fit just the same

i was just thinking your clusters look odd, how old is that parlour? de laval here was new around 2000 i think, harmoany clusters, i hate them but they are very good for the cows, very good milk flow from them
