    Responsibilities for managing water

Very true. The other thing I'm thinking is, we can't tell what the subsurface water is doing and what the clay is like underneath the soil above. Excuse the simple drawing, it's hard on a phone, but where I'm thinking the surface running toward us isn't large and ends at the green line, it could...

    Responsibilities for managing water

There is a ditch, yes, though not much of one. It runs as far as the entrance in the first photo. The land falls toward us from the green line in each other photo and away on the other side. The field beyond the problem field falls away on the other side too. The field on the opposite side that...

    Responsibilities for managing water

You all must be rubbing off on me! Although, I am surrounded by problem fields, am forever skint and my wife keeps telling me I have a ruddy complexion, so maybe I am? 😅

    Responsibilities for managing water

I think you're right, it seems fairly straightforward enough. Water has nowhere to go, so give it somewhere! The adjacent field has proper concrete drainage with manholes and rungs to climb down into them, I'm sure it could manage our puddle 😅

    Responsibilities for managing water

It would be good to know where it says that. But then, at least for me, the next challenge would be proving that was where it came from. I thought about tracing dye but from reading up on it, it gets filtered through soil anyway. So if it's being helped to fill from a leaking storm drain, I...

    Responsibilities for managing water

You can't make this stuff up can you. Honestly, is it too much to ask organisations like local councils, water boards, environment agency etc. to just do they job that they're in place and paid/funded to do?! 🤦

    Responsibilities for managing water

Very good point, I shall have to dig all of that out and see because when we viewed the property it was nothing but a puddle and we were assured it was a leak that was being handled by Yorkshire Water. When we turned up in the moving van it had grown quite a bit. When we chased up Yorkshire...

    Responsibilities for managing water

That's really interesting to know, I'd be keen to know what you wished you'd claimed on. If not for me, for the land owner on the other side - I suppose it depends where the leak is? When they tested the water last winter, their lab report concluded there was no drinking water in there which...

    Responsibilities for managing water

Thank you 🙏 I hope that I am, and I'm sure that they are too. I'll happily help digging too, I wouldn't be out of my depth with a spade (sorry, I'll stop now!). Good to know that the facilities wouldn't be a barrier to getting it done though.

    Responsibilities for managing water

Oh yeah they were really nice to chat with when we saw them before winter, few mutual friends of friends etc. so I've no doubt they will be sympathetic to our situation and be willing to help, particularly if we bear the brunt of the cost. Unfortunately our garden doesn't extend so far that it...

    Responsibilities for managing water

All really sound advice here, thank you all. It certainly would benefit us much more than the farmer and we would absolutely bear as much of the cost as they think reasonable; through family we can get plant at great rates (crate of beer and a favour owed). Just a case really of waiting until...

    Responsibilities for managing water

You may be right, the council have washed their hands of it (pun intended). Unfortunately we feel quite alone in it without the weight of any other interested parties to try and persuade them to give the issue more attention.

    Responsibilities for managing water

Thank you 🙏 Yes I do want to talk to them, just trying to work out what a reasonable and fair approach would be to try and steer the conversation toward. It probably wouldn't be a problem save for the road which has effectively dammed the water in. On the other side of the road, the fields run...

    Responsibilities for managing water

No, it's fairly significant and it's a worry what it's doing to the house we put all of our savings into! It seems strange to me that when the road was re-done, there wasn't a culvert put in, there are culverts further up and down but not here. The road has drains that the council have...

    Responsibilities for managing water

When he was turning I took the opportunity to talk to him and said we were hopeful that the water board had found the issue and that we wouldn't see a repeat, and he echoed that. But he did also say that they had already had a good look at the area to try and find an old culvert that maybe...
