SFI - Self Help and Tips

Have been looking into herbal leys (sam3) but we have a lot of HEFER sites on all but three small parcels. Some of the sites cover a big proportion of the parcel and others minute. Today I phoned RPA to find out if I could do sam3 as a part parcel excluding the HEFER sites which they could not...

Mushrooms in field, what are they

Good rule of thumb for most, as it rules out the majority of toxic ones but there’s plenty which make good eating with white gills like St. George’s day and even some amanita

    Bloat in sheep

Update: I believe it could be the poppies which are causing it, not the Lucerne. Had believed they were one of the herbs in the mix, only realised what they are now and that they’re not supposed to be there!

    Bloat in sheep

On Thursday I moved ewes and lambs onto a herbal ley, sown last autumn, aiming for 3 day moves. Yesterday morn (sat) they had grazed off more than I expected so moved them early that afternoon a bit hungrier than I’d of liked. Checked later that night to find the vast majority moderately bloated...

    Ticks in abundance already

Yeah, been housed the last 6 weeks. Wouldn’t call it rough grass but there’s my 2m cross compliance next to hedges on two sides although that’s where the electric fence runs so only 1m available and they don’t tend to lie that close to it. I doubt all of them came from that. Often see a lot of...

    Ticks in abundance already

Yep, I just turned lambs out onto new pasture sown in autumn, previously arable for as long as I can remember ploughing every year. Noticed a lamb limping after 10 days so had a look only to be mortified at the number of ticks on it. Being a Sunday afternoon I decided, despite some only being 5...

    FETF livestock water bowser

Anyone else looking at this? Already got a homemade one which is okay but would be handy to have a second so it saves a journey when filling. Any recommendations for suppliers? TIA

    Grazing Winter barley

yeah it’s not, I’m not saying it needed grazing but I don’t think it will harm it too much either.

    Grazing Winter barley

Potentially, so they say anyway. My first attempt at it so time will tell, but the w barley regrowth I have been grazing has come back thick so that responded well. Whether it will transpire into the grain I have no idea

    Grazing Winter barley

Put 40 sheep on an acre yesterday as an experiment. Not too much paddling so I’ll get them over the other 7 acres of it with daily moves.

Borage,Camaelina,Quinoa,Echium ,Ahiflower ,and Opium Poppies for Pharmacutical Industry?

Borage self seeds easy but is pretty easy to control as long as you don’t follow with potatoes or something daft, a stale seedbed approach works well even without spraying. Gives good green cover over winter too, 3 years after harvest I reckon you’d do well to find a B plant in that field. Might...
