I have fed blocks but try to just use bagged feed given each day can be a effort to get them to stay around to take it and not wonder off. Hoping to try a 3 in one feeder on the hill see if I can train them to come to it. Post lambing they are fed while on the in bye but once the lambs a week or...
I have subdivided the in bye land I have as much as possible. I have put on permenant fencing but you could maybe try electric fencing. Have the ewes in bye for as short a space of time as possible. I feed them on the hill pre lambing then just as they due to lamb take them all in. As they lamb...
Just a wee update on this gave it a go shredding some Heather. Never did much just a small bundle see how it worked. Was only about 10 mins cutting it but was about 45 mins shredding it. Came out ok plan to do more later but would be better with a more industrial shredder as that was the slow...
we are not allowed to take sand on this island as there is too much coastal erosion. cant see any problem with cutting the heather it gets burnt in sections each spring anyway. will get a cheap shredder and give it a try. how much space is left under the slatted floor and how easy is it to clean...
was thinking tree secateurs or i have got a small chain saw attachment for a strimmer. plenty over grown heather on the island i could get. not that i would need a great deal not exactly running a big operation
not sure what the heather would be like once shredded but nothing to loose giving it...
the sheep come of the hill and are on tick ground anyway so hopefully ticks wouldnt be a problem but it defo something to think about if using it when rams are bought in
Anyone have any thoughts on using heather as bedding. my idea being to put it through a garden shredder and having it when i house any sheep. would there be any problems with using it would a shredder get it fine enough. my own thought being it will be easy to clean up and spread on the ground...
I normally wean the lambs just now when they are around 14-15 weeks of age. My reasons for doing this are that as my ewes are hill ewes it gives them a bit longer to get back into decent condition for tupping after they go back to the hill. normally there is decent amount of grass on the inbye...
cheers will give them a couple of weeks. usually give them about a month but got plenty grazing on the hill so would be best all round if i can get them back onto it soon as.
How soon could I let the ewes and lambs mix together after being weaned. want to let the ewe lambs back to the hill just wondering how long I should leave it. will a week be long enough.
wee update on this one. got the gimmers scanned with one empty out of 11 so pleased enough about that. just going to keep them inbye until lambing to keep an eye on them see if there are any abortions or problems with them. tupping went well 40 ewes covered in the first 3 weeks with just one...
