For college students who are frantically trying to get a college essay assignment written before that looming deadline, these online ads can be quite tempting. Imagine being able to pay someone else to write that term paper and not have to worry about it.

Tempting as this may be, though, turning in a college paper assignment that was written by somebody else is a bad, bad idea. Here are some things for students to think about before outsourcing their homework.

Plagiarism, Academic Dishonesty, and Ethics
Is it wrong to turn in a paper that someone else wrote? Regardless of one's opinion on this matter, colleges and universities certainly think this is wrong. Browse any student handbooks and two words that are guaranteed to be addressed are plagiarism and academic dishonesty.

Plagiarism means taking somebody else's words and claiming these words are one's own. This is theft. if a student takes someone's web content without their permission and turns this into a course paper, this is plagiarism.

But is plagiarism to purchase a paper from a website that sells student essays, or to pay someone on a custom essay writing website to write a course paper? This is somewhat debatable, since nothing was actually stolen. However, this kind of essay purchase definitely falls under the definition of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty refers to any attempt by a student to deceive an instructor as to the legitimacy of one's work.

So is this wrong? Back to the original point: the school thinks it's wrong. Any student caught participating in academic dishonesty faces serious consequences, including suspension. Professors are often pretty wise about catching papers that weren't really written by the student, and they tend to lack mercy when catching a wayward student. As far as the professor is concerned, cheating on a paper shows a serious lack of respect for the academic process and everything that a college education is supposed to be all about.

So here are two reasons why not to purchase term papers: (1) fear of getting caught and punished, and (2) not wanting to violate the trust of professors and the mission of academia. But if that's not enough, here's another good reason to avoid these sites.

There are two kinds of websites where students can purchase term papers. Student essay sites have prewritten papers for sale. Custom essay writing sites offer research paper writing services. For these sites, students submit an assignment, pay a fee, and collect the paper.

From a customer service perspective, there are several problems to consider. First, these services are very expensive, especially when a student needs something written at the last minute. Purchasing a paper that's already written is usually cheaper, but it's pretty hard to find a prewritten paper that meets all the specifications of complex assignments.

Perhaps more importantly, many custom paper writing websites are notorious for ripping off students. After all, if they steal the student's money or deliver a terrible paper, what can the student really do? The student is cheating too, so it's not like he or she can complain to the professor, parents, or other who might be able to help out. Moreover, many of these companies are based in Third World countries where writing labor is cheap, so it's very difficult to prosecute their bad business practices.

Some of the ways that fraudulent or unethical term paper companies rip off students include:

• Setting up fly-by-night websites, taking the students' money, and closing shop.
• Ignoring requests for rewrites if the work is shoddy.
• Hiring writers in Third World countries for cheap who are not native English speakers, and who turn in insufficient work.
• Sending students papers that are plagiarized from somewhere else on the web and claiming that these are "custom" papers.

Cheating Yourself?
As stated above, whether turning in papers written by someone else is unethical is a matter of opinion. But consider this. Professors do not create assignments for the fun of it. Assignments are created to teach students how to do something, and part of that "something" is to improve writing skills. When students hire someone else to write a paper, they are losing the opportunity to learn. When it comes to writing skills, this is a critical skill that every college student will need in the workplace.

When students cheat, it's often out of desperation. It doesn't seem possible to get a paper done before the deadline, so they try to buy their way out of the problem. However, this may cause more problems than it solves, as there are serious consequences for getting caught and the risk of dealing with some pretty unscrupulous companies. All things considered, just sitting down and writing that paper may just be the best option.
