    Swallows 2024

Our swallows back in the yard last 2 days, good to see them back flying in and out of tollents as they have all my life. Swallows are great but your own local ones are special.

How many of you block rights of way?

I would like all walkers to have taken an exam on how to walk on a path , how to open and close a gate , how to be able to take all their litter home. They would then be footpath assured and let loose in the countryside. They would also be able to top up this assurance scheme , to then be able...

    Hemlock control

Was it Socrates who chose hemlock as his choice for the death penalty. Dad used to tell the tale when we saw it growing in the brook. Cows used to graze the leaf , but it’s the white roots which are poisonous.

    Ewe headbutting her lamb

Tie her to a hurdle 1 string round neck 1 in front of back legs. Lamb can suck when wants and ewe will calm down and after a couple of hours accept lamb.

How did wildlife manage, before Wildlife trusts bought farms to manage them for nature?

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t the birds declining in areas actively managed by the RSPB. Did read that bird species at Lake Vyrnwy had declined over the years which is 5000 ha in size run by the RSPB. Locally the Elan Valley Trust has banned fox hunting, where the curlew is...

    Triplets

Keep them on their own, feed them well, even twice a day if needed. Be prepared to take away any lamb starting to fall behind. Get the creep out early and it should work out ok. Have weaned one off the sets in the past at 5 weeks and brought them inside.

diary of a comedy sheep farm

Leave the cades alone. Risk of introducing new scour and goodness what else onto the farm. Close the flock as much as you can. Take the first loss

    Feeding ewes post-lambing?

Ewes are infuriating ,rough weather finds them in the middle of the field taking their lambs with them. Cows always seem to hide their calves in ditches and sheltered places. Have been told that shorn ewes will look for shelter, anyone got experience of this.

    Lambing losses.

As far as livestock losses are concerned, the public and government shold concentrate on human losses and care in maternity and geriatric wards.

    Lambing losses.

50+ years of lambing and my thoughts are if you’re having a bad lambing or a good one ,it isn’t long till the next lambing comes to even things out. So don’t get too depressed or too smug. As Kipling said in If about triumph and disaster , treat those 2 imposters both the same.

    Joint Ill - Lambs

Talking to the vet who says that joint I’ll is mostly introduced through the mouth, dirty teats or sucks wool before finding teat. As its environmental cleanliness is very important. If it was through the navel then there would be more navel infections.

Where to buy a farm abroad with opportunities to actually farm

Have thought of moving to another country and over the border to Herefordshire. Deep red soil, grow any arable crop all sorts of fruit, sheep beef dairying. Imagine selling straw instead of buying it. This time next year Rodney.
