Might as well not have bothered sending it, nothing we didn’t already know. Be better if they spent the time sorting the balls up that they have created out.
Deadweight firms will be liking hoggs with teeth up and poor sorts coming through dragging the average down so they can drop the price. Glad I’ve got the last of mine all away. Another 8 weeks or so and we will be starting this years.
We (previous generations) used to lamb in 1 field then walk out the twins into the meadows and some batches the singles as well into a different field. This was when 2 people were lambing 600 ewes between them. I’m lambing 1000 outside on my own now, plus looking the 300 that were lambed inside...
I’ve got an old root bucket I picked up cheap that splits it. Should really have been feeding it from march to the mule ewes but it’s just a hassle getting it out when it’s so wet. When it’s dry it’s a doddle with the rear discharge. There’s a few lambs off shearlings just looking a bit pinched...
Was contemplating getting a little trailer load of beet as there some available not too far away but was unsure how the young ewes would get onto it as never had it for a few years.
Yes mark the ewes when they’re in the pens then shed a couple off every night as i go round. Few get marked at clipping as well. Nice to get 100 away early so i dont end up with 200+ culls to deal with at weaning.
I start sorting my culls into separate fields this next couple of weeks and keep feeding them right through. Hopefully get them away mid july before the glut. Had a right do last year with them for what they were.
I wouldn’t rush them away, keep them to that 6 weeks age and you will be nearer £100 per life. Was getting £90 last year for them, sold some at home this year for that and have a handful left for longtown on Tuesday.
