Were on our 2nd Polaris, great vehicle but like all utv they cannot be taxed as a light agric unless run on white diesel. If you don’t do many road miles or go less than a kilometre from your farm you will be ok.
We got stopped and was told if we’re caught again they will impound and charge us...
We’ve tried for a few farms and as we had built up a flock while still in full time work getting the funds wasn’t a problem.
Biggest problem is finding the farms, length of tenancy but the biggest problem was the high rent.
We could break even at £120 an acre and would have to make money by...
A neighbour uses recycled plastic posts and drills through them and runs plain wire on his fields.
Gives him the option of putting electric through it if he wants and can all be put in with the post knocker
Don’t bother testing now, we had trouble last year and tested the rams that were in that bunch and the semen sample was to poor to tell.
We had them retested about 3 weeks before tupping and got a better sample but still not as easy as you would think.
£900 seems a lot of money, our vet does it...
We usually get female vets and I have to say they are every bit as capable as the male ones we used to get.
I think agriculture in general is struggling to recruit good people but they are bad at keeping hold of the good ones to.
I used to work on a college and if there were 30 people on the...

Yeah we crossed a lot with the shorthorn and they look cracking calves but we were less lucky/picky about the bull and ended up calving quite a few.
In 5 years I’ve only calved 3 Devon’s to the Devon and probably calved 15 out of 70 this year to the shorthorn, an Angus over them might be better
Yearlings 350
3-4 months 1-150
Stores 4-450
Finished 450-550.
Cows 550-600.
We are a coastal farm and have Devon’s, they will get fat off fresh air but finishing them is tricky
This might not be the right place but here we go.
Anyone in the south hams/ surrounding areas of Devon that are looking to slow down/retire?
My wife and I are currently employed but run sheep of our own and are looking for our first chance to farm in our own right.
Open to all offer/suggestions.
£11.50 a ewe with lambs averaging £60 head and weaned 147%.
Running 2000 ewes that’s a wage and you wouldn’t spend all day every day with them.
Like I said I work for someone so I don’t run 2000 but would be happy to if I had the chance, maybe even more.
The way the sub is set up now is nuts...
Just seen the post about lack of shepherds in the south, Ive seen one job advertising for shepherds in a year, one was a ropey job and other was where the owner makes all decisions and you just work with what they want, not a flock manager/shepherds job.
If anyone’s thinking sheep farmings not...
You must be on a different stretch of SW coast path to us, within 12 months we had 6 ponies chased over the edge (1 turned up in the local harbour), people pick yo their dog mess then leave the bags on the fences or throw them in the hedge and you only find them when your hedge cutting and...
We have a lot and don’t seem to have many problems but only lamb singles on those fields and keep it really tight to stop prolapsed ewes and big singles
I have a young dog that might suit you, I know you are looking for maybe an older dog but this one is pretty laid back, but not lazy or useless, but still very capable of farm work.
He’s a NZ heading dog from imported parents but works pretty similar to a collie dog.
If your interested give me...
