    Lambing staff

He looks pretty chill and he lets you drive his truck. I love watching older good dogs work. They command the field with such a gentle presence. What is his name? I wish you two many more years together.

    Lambing staff

I would agree. But I need a fool proof system to ID those ewes that have not lambed. They all look alike to me. Again, a good work dog. One that can get a new mothers attention enough so she scans for her lamb(s) so I know who to move.

    Lambing staff

The best way to do this is with a good work dog or a couple of them. Train them to lift and shift only ewes with lambs. They will need to be quite working dogs that can walk through the flock and gently lift the targets and push them in the desired direction. Grannies (mismothering) can be...

At least they are experienced enough to use a winch.

    How to keep 1500 ewes

Defiantly. Barns are for people and their stuff. Livestock do not need barns. People need them as in theory it would save a lot of time in daily tasks. Make sure the solar company is seeding a high quality forage and not some cheap VNS or even worse amenity grass. If I was a party to the lease...

    Fence cut or broken

I would say cut. It looks to clean to be a natural brake. But with the section that only the bottom 2 wires where cut, perhaps they got spooked or broke their nippers in the process.

    Grazing westerwolds

Ewes with two week old lambs. This is a Italian with north African genetics. It is a high sugar grass and a tetraploid. Planted in September of 2023. In a grazing situation it will produce 10t/DM/A on sandy soil with a Ph of 6. In a couple of weeks it will be growing 3" a day. What will be...

    Is this goiter

While the animal is relatively calm, have a look at its lower eyelid on either eye. If pale, I would suspect hypoproteinaemia. Eyelids should be bright red. I will also mention that in regards to Haemonchosis it is possible to have a clean fecal while at the same time the animal has a gut full...

    TB from cow colostrum

Johnes (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) or just MAP and TB (M. Bovis) are spread in fluids. Fluids include aerosols. They are in the same family of Mycobacterium. To answer your question I would assume it is possible to transfer Mycobacterium Bovis to the new lamb this way...

    Is this goiter

Goiter should be further back at the tail end of the jaw. To me that looks like hypoproteinaemia. Liver flukes and Haemonchosis would be suspect. Also copper (both low and high levels), Johnes and other mineral imbalances.

Confessions of the Sheep/Beef Cattle/Pig Addicts

Setting a brake for the early lambers. Lambing is suppose to start 7 days from now, yet 60 ewes have had lambs. Those little f**kers. The weather has been mixed with a little bit of everything except snow. Average night time temps are around 40F. Soil temp is trying to get to 50F but we have...

    Intensive cell grazing cattle

Infrastructure makes that possible along with lower stocking density. Greg has permanent HT parameter that the single strand in connected on. If they get out of the cell, they should not make it where they should not be. He also uses LGD and lives in a rural area where there not many people...

    Intensive cell grazing cattle

With Sheep/Lambs we call this drift lambing. In general this system works under management and genetic selection. Both beast and forage genetics need to be selected for the environment in which they operate. The management part comes in to play when the manager keeps temperament of the beast in...
