    Message from ABP

mmm ABP hardly have a great track record when it comes to being open and transparent about the origin of its beef or should I say horsemeat! and as for Dunbia aren't they know as "done by" Dobson

Beef prices: NFU outlines industry action

srecent email from Robert Foster ex NBA, his newsletter is reasonably good and he seem to never that far of the mark Tomorrow's Beef Industry Newsletter covers one of the most difficult weeks for the UK beef industry since 1974 - disease crises created by BSE and FMD apart. It has also been...

What's the answers /solutions for the beef farmer.

Stirling last week average for heifers was 218p/kg, Aberdeen was 228p/kg 470kg heifer - somewhere between £1024 and £1071, so doubt if that adds up to another £200 made !!!

Aye and the lying barstewards seemed to get away with it and look at all the empty promises from the supermarkets!

I completely agree, the suckler producer needs stores to be pretty much were they are, especially given the time and commitment etc put into producing a good forward store. CAP reform in Scotland will place pressure on suckler cow numbers and intensive finishers, so if QMS/NFUS/Scot Gov etc...

What's the answers /solutions for the beef farmer.

yes in hindsight they were too expensive, but then look at store prices at the moment - Stirling last week average for heifers was 218p/kg, Aberdeen was 228p/kg!! With current fat prices I cant justify giving more than £1.80 to achieve a margin of £60/hd or 50pence per day on farm (which isn't...

Your right, the thing is I'm planning not to buy any stock at all, have about 250 head left to sell between now and September, not going to replace them until I can secure a certain return from whatever I put back in the buildings. the feed/grain was all grown on rented ground, which I have...

    "New" second feed bin

I got some budget costs for bins a while ago, only asked for "budget" costs so there is probably a bit to play with in terms of price. Roblew quoted for a 22tonne split bin at £4395 but no auger, 32 tonne bin single chamber was £4240. Mcaree Engineering - 30 tonne single on gantry for wagon to...

    Beef Sheds

We feed with a Keenan 360 on a JD6830, since that pic was taken i have moved the walls a bit, originally the wall alongside the shed was 15ft out from the shed, this has been widened to 23ft, the wall at the end of the shed was 30ft from the end of the shed but this has been moved back to fit...

    Beef Sheds

Plenty of cattle clipped up here in scotland, would be unusual to send cattle out of SW Scotland without having to at least make an effort to clip brisket and belly - perhaps damper climate and expensive straw means we have more dirty cattle?, not just as important now ABP willing to do it for...

    Beef Sheds

The tank is 100ft long, 26ft wide and about 8ft deep. tank was shuttered with concrete pillars and beams to support the slats. The stanchions for shed go rightto the bottom of the tank. it was a really cost effective way of housing a decent number of cattle. you may have seen the shed in...

    Beef Sheds

I've built a new beef unit over the last three years - slats for about 180 head and straw bedded pens for 120 head. Slats all fitted with rubber mats - the Comfort Slat Mat type. Very pleased with slat mats, fat cattle drawn straight off these pens for slaughter without much clipping, cattle on...

    Finishing Holstein/Friesian

I've signed up with blade to buy 60 reared bull calves delivered in feb. I'd reared 110 over the summer and after taking all my costs into account the blade calves will be about £30 dearer than doing it myself, I doubt if the £30 would cover the labour etc. main benefit is that they have the...
