    If you're seeing grey ash - alot, then I'd try and steer the pile towards less heat/more moisture next time. When I compost, I don't tend to see fruiting mushrooms. It depends on how you make your compost. I understand Dr Ingham doesn't really care how anyone composts, only about the biology...

    Excess actinomycetes is a signal the pile has gotten too hot at some point.

    The grey Ash effect may will be Actinomycetes. Saprophytic fungi may well be present also.

    Just DM for an addresss, a small sample in a ziplock bag should be good enough, include an email address for the photos 👍

    If it helps, I have a microscope and can take photos easily enough, so if you want to send a soil sample I happily send say 5 pictures, maybe a video if I see something interesting. For those making compost, sending a sample from where you hope to find some fungal diversity might be the best...
