Historically stock were stunned with a poleaxe - blunt trauma to use farm assurance lingo. When my dad was growing up in the forties pigs were shot for home consumption. The captive bolt was invented in 1903, so a long history of stunning before slaughter.
As a Christian I prefer not...
Contact the Young Farmers Clubs and see if they can circulate. Hopefully match you with a young person and somewhere you can have a good learning experience.

Wet day jobs!
I've realised that my wayleave payment for a pole and stay in the yard has stopped coming.
The equipment was removed at NG's behest when they buried overhead cables that ran under a transmission line and replaced with a pad mounted transformer that serves me and another...
I adjoined 90 acres of set aside that in return for a light topping in the summer I was allowed to graze from Sept 1st to Jan 15th.
Huge reduction in wintering costs and the start of my journey towards; stockpiling, outwintering and mob grazing.
I bought a larger adjoining block of land in 2007 interest only. Perfect timing as it turned out with rising prices and low interest rates. The 'rent' has varied by £200/acre but will average less than rent and I benefit fron the uplift in value. Happy to refinance as inflation reduces the real...

Been thinking it's time I bought some raddle - end of November for last week of April here. Ewes on mud and straw to keep the weight off, forecast frost supposed to get them cycling?
I knew someone would spot that!
Yes it would. I can pull the hooks up but they don’t snap back down into the locking position as they should when released. Lifting rods need some adjustment to work properly as well.
As above needs sorting out. Needs a new cable and an odd weld but won’t positively push itself into locking position. The two flat steels running through the centre are solid and appear to be as they should. Are they spring steel? Should they have tension on them and how is this achieved?
Can’t...
If your on the fence, don't miss this opportunity to meet Jaime face to face.
I learned more from him in a few hours yesterday than I have in a lifetime of experience and years of lectures, reading, meetings etc. etc!
Hi
I've got one here.
4 bay 60 x 30 with 3 or 4 foot overhang. Dismantled and been stacked outside for some years. Roof may not be worth fitting again and steel best blasted and painted or galvanised.
Offers invited as I've no plans to erect it.
Thanks
Nick
