I think its a strip down of pump as seal fits from the inside I think. They do on later machines anyway but I could be wrong on an old one. Taking it of is easy enough. Move or take rad off to find a small access plate under the water pump take this off to find the pump shaft nut. Then take every thing off round pump and the mounting nuts of the pump wiggle it loose to break gasket seal. Get someone to hold and gently pull on pump with mounting nuts off. Get a copper drift and give shaft a good tap it will jump off the taper. Do not ram bars in and lever pump off you will damage it but equally you must pull on pump slightly to make sure the gear is up against the timing case so the force of yhe hammer blows does not transfur in to the pump. The ideal way is to make a puller which I have for the newer ones but not sure it would work on the old ones unless you took the whole timing case off? Depends if you can see the 2 threaded holes in the gear from the access plate or not. A puller is the best way and the only way on the later ones as the tapers on the gear are so much tighter that the old ones. Dont worry about timing the pump is keyed to the gear so nothing to go wrong.
