Written by John Swire The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has appointed Angela Christison as its new strategy director for Pork. Angela, who will take up her post on 2 April, will support the work of the AHDB Pork Sector Board, delivering the strategy and supporting the sector in its post Brexit drive to become ‘fit for the future’. She will take over from current strategy director Mick Sloyan, who retires in the summer after 40 years in the industry. In her new role, Angela will work with the teams across AHDB to deliver against agreed plans and ensure levies are used to achieve maximum impact. She will work alongside the five other sector strategy directors responsible for Beef & Lamb, Dairy, Horticulture, Potatoes, and Cereals & Oilseeds. AHDB chief strategy officer Tom Hind said: “I am delighted to have Angela as part of the strategy team. She will bring a wealth of knowledge from across the livestock sectors as well as extensive experience from international agricultural business development. We look forward to seeing her positive influence over both the pork sector and our wider team.” Mike Sheldon, Pork Board Chairman, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Angela will be joining AHDB. The pork sector needed someone who thinks strategically on behalf of the industry, with international experience and a track record in managing change. Angela has experience in bringing people together to create coherent teams and understands the meat industry up and down the supply chain. “She is a great communicator not to mention a decent human being! We can’t wait to introduce Angela to as many people in the pork sector as possible.” On the retirement of Mick Sloyan, Mike added: “I have personally depended on Mick as an inexhaustible fountain of expertise, wisdom and advice, and I know that I am not the only one. Mick will be with us until June, but in the meantime I would like to thank him for everything he has done for our industry, for AHDB and for all his many friends.” Angela has experience in the dairy, beef and pork livestock sectors. She has lived and worked internationally and spent 17 years with Genus PLC. In 2002 she was appointment as their Global Business Development director based in Wisconsin USA and was instrumental in the Genus purchase of the Pig Improvement Company in 2005. After gaining her BSc Honours Degree in Agriculture in 1989 from Seale-Hayne Agricultural College she joined Genus as a Cattle Breeding specialist based in Yorkshire, buying bulls for the stud and supporting farmers to get the most from their dairy and beef enterprises. She was promoted to Resources director and oversaw the move of back office functions from London to Cheshire prior to managing national production, sales, purchasing and research and development teams throughout the UK and Europe. Following her career with Genus Angela set up her own training business and has designed and delivered hundreds of training programmes over the past seven years for both the public and private sector. This has included international agricultural businesses, the banking sector and construction industries. She specialises in business skills such as negotiation, influencing, stakeholder and contract management working with senior managers and their teams to boost individual and business performance. Angela is passionate about the UK Agricultural Industry and optimising its strength as we move forward in challenging times.
