Bakewell Market Mon 22nd June Despite ideal grass harvesting weather, the market was busy for the time of year with 512 Cattle & 1286 Sheep Business clearly boosted by a constant stream of new vendors finding their way to Bakewell and some more familiar names happy to return to market now vendors are permitted to be present whilst their stock is being sold. The store cattle department was a little short on numbers as some of the entered cattle failed to make the journey due to transport difficulties, they will be coming next week together with a special entry of 44 Lim x Heifers (7-11 mths). So we have most of 100 entered at the time of writing. This Monday we ended up with 268 Stores and can report another terrific trade with a number of the regular buyers unable to secure a load. Steers peaked at a remarkable £1290 with Heifers to £1180 and Feeding Bulls to £990. The Finished cattle section was also busy with a total of 104 on offer. Trade was exceptional with top figures 239p & £1515. More remarkable are the averages with 34 Heifers averaging 205.3p and the 34 Steers an outstanding 192.5p. No shortage of stock or Trade in the OTM and feeding cow section, 103 head on offer with the best forward to 178p and £1540, the overall average looking good at 124.4p. Calf numbers on the rise at 37 with prices up too, Bulls to £420 and Heifers to £290. Turning to the sheep section there were 741 Spring Lambs which looked well sold with top figures 258p & £126.14. The SQQ average at 217p. Very few Old Season lambs about selling to 196p and £96, average 163p. A good selection of 405 Cull sheep attracted plenty of interest with ewes to £126, averaging £77.68. FORTHCOMING FIXTURES • Thursday 25th June – lunchtime sheep sale at 12 noon, together with ewes with lambs at foot sold through the ring at 1pm.
