Why? the benefits are usually so short lived: 20 years ago a huge pork company wanted to set up a barn nearby for thousands of pigs- the P.R . people invited the town council for a BBQ , were very friendly , and the council thought they were great guys .When the corporation applied for a permit to build a mega barn it was immediatelyapproved without any discussion.The whole region went bonkers and a large group of citizens spent alot of time fighting this decision: there were meetings, petitions, lawyers hired, to no avail( there was such a stink (!) over this that Quebec placed a 5 year moratorium on the granting of permits for mega pork barn, but that’s a different story.) The barn was built, the farmer’s wife left him quite soon , he went bankrupt and lost all the land, but the large corporation kept the barn and the acre or two it was on . They always seem to win. The town council didn’t enjoy their position for long either. Everyone was voted out and replaced .</p></blockquote><p></p>
